Or a Makita 7301, how do I most easily acquire one?

I have no local Dolmar Dealer. But, I also have no Husqvarna dealer, and a very very very poor Stihl Dealer now. So Im thinking, Ill broaden my horizens and try a dolmar.

However, Im not feeling for the 7900, because I'd like some better fuel economy, and Im looking for a saw to fill the 361/460 gap I have. Yes, Im making excuses for a new saw...

Anyways, Dolmars are dealer only, and I don't know of anywhere to get a 73cc Makita. Any options open for me?

I want to pull a 24" bar, softwoods... so Im thinking a 6301 would suffice for now... maybe put the 73cc cylinder on it later.

But I must ask, is there a noticeable and appreciable fuel economy increase from the 7900 to a 7300 and from there to a 6300?

OK Ich, here is a thought for you, do you have a Home Depot close buy? You can rent one, or order a saw from them. Just an idea.

What kind of question is that? Everyone has a home depot(although most people hate them, including me:angry2:). Evan

The 7300 weighs the same as the 7900, and I think the same as the 6300.
For my money I went with the 7900 (I've got 2 right now), if I'm going to pack the weight I want the power.
Fuel consumption on my 7900's isn't bad, actually a little better than my 372's. I went with the 372's over the 365's because their weight's are too close too. I must have a thing about weight.

Also I you want a little stronger of saw for a 32" bar the 7900 should pull it with more authority over the 460.:greenchainsaw:  :)

I like mine, but a little heavy

For what it's worth:
I bought one of the HD 6401 Makitas. I love the saw, especially in the bigger softwood, although I got a 16" bar for some of the smaller hardwood in the area. It is a little heavy, gets about the same economy as my 036, is not as loud as my Stihls (no mods), AND the AV system is superior. It is heavy, but the lack of a see-through fuel tank is actually a little frustrating. I thought it wouldn't be, but I have grown to like the clear fuel tanks. And hey, for the money, a 64cc saw that doesn't vibrate bad, and has the power you need is a nice touch.

Just my $.02

Jason

Yes, fuel economy is a bit better for the 6401 versus the 7900. As for getting one, your best bet would probably be to have one of us buy you one and send it to you.

Thanks for that bit of info. As far as power goes, 5.4bhp or whatever the 7300 puts out should be well enough to drive a 24" bar all the way to full buried, Ill take less fueling up and more cutting.

The fuel economy of the 7900 isn't all that bad, I'd say skip the 6300 and go for the 7900. The biggest saw Makita makes is the 6301, at one time they did make the 7301 and the 7901.

There is not a 6300 in the Dolmar line. They are PS6400, PS7300, & PS7900 all the same specs except for Bore and Porting. The PS 7300 and PS7900 are very close power wise running a 20" when you get into the 24" + size bars thats when you notice the extra power of the PS7900.

I don't understand this fuel economy issue..A 7900 will cut more wood, or cut it faster than a smaller saw. So, if it runs out quicker, so what?

I only ran my 6401 a couple times after I got it from Lowe's for $225, while waiting for the jug kit to arrive from Bailey's. It was underwhelming till it was turned into a 7901. Now, it keeps up with my Walkerized 372, and it is still bone stock.

I bought a 6400

Last fall I bought a new dolmar 6400, It ran great, But after reading here about the improvement over the 6400 the 7900 was.. I bought a new p&c mercy sakes alive will that saw eat wood.
I just picked up a new 7900 yesterday for a buddy with a 24 inch b&c for right at 625 out the door.. I am delivering it this morning.. Maybe he will give you a follow up on his feelings toward the saw.
I had ordered two 5100s but they shipped em to the dealer in .325 and he ordered .375.. so he ordered two more for me. will be here Monday or Tuesday.
I see no reason to ever buy the 6400 or the 7300 when a few more pennies buys more horsepower. for the same weight.

7901 was there for some time, and I believe 7301 also (not sure) - by now I believe they offer the 6401 only (not 6301).;)

All the saws are made by Dolmar, none by Makita.

What's the price difference between the 7300 and 7900 (with the same b&c setup)?

Yes - Dolmar makes all the saws, but Makita has owned Dolmar since 1991.

I have a Makita power cutter with the same 73cc engine as the Dolmar 7300. It has power to spare, but it's only driving a 14" abrasive wheel. It has never given me any trouble - starts with 3 pulls every time. But the 7300 is almost as powerful as your MS460 and only a pound lighter, so it sounds like you already have that power band covered.

You could probably pick up a 64 cc Dolmar or Makita for a little over $500, plus shipping. For the Dolmar, would Scott ship one to you? For the Makita, I'm sure you could find one online.

Although both the PS7300 and the PC7335/PC7314 are the same displacement they DO NOT USE THE SAME PISTON AND CYLINDER to totally different rpm ranges and torque bands. I do have a demo 7300 I can sell you if you cannot find one locally.

My bad Scott,
Since I had discounted the 6400 in my arsenal, well I guess I must have had a " brain fart".
