What do you do when the boss tells you to butcher trees? He knows nothing about professional arboriculture or the term ethics. I tell him all the consequence's of what he wants me to do, and inform him of some or many alternatives but he doesn't want to know...

Maybe he dos know the difference between good work and bad ,but it might be down to what the client adamantly wants. It may be a case of top trees etc or you might not have any work what would you prefer ??

If he is just ignorant to modern best practice then you need to educate him.. :) If this is the case do it subtly :)

bosses

im working on my boss. he dont top but im teaching him things. taught him a bowline with yosemite tie off and double fishermans (you know the knot and the terminology) to tie it off.

jamie

I run along the same lines as Jamie, I quietly (well most of thetime;)) try to influance the people I work for. Thorugh suggestions and anecdotes I will try to get the work that needs to bo done doen in a way that will hurt the tree as little as possible.

That's not allways possible, if the homeowner wants more light then a raise and gut may be the only option.

There are few things more gratifying as a climber then to have your own words directed back to you in trimming spec's.

if you know so much more than your boss..........how come he's not working for you?

Well if it was as simple as that, every trained arborist would be in business.

I contract out when ever i can. Plus i would never hire him.

It goes; study, contract work, then work for this boss. If im too busy i let him know and get on with what i need to.

Jamie and JP, i think you are right, i will have to work on him...

Hope i can put up with it for as long as it takes to change his ways.

I think he knows how to tye a bowline...

Jim, just tell him that if he wants to butcher trees his way then he does the cutting and you can ground for him. I had Exactly the same problem with my old boss and told him the same.

Tauranga has to many arborists cutting each others lunches. I wouldnt go out on your own up there, its to cut throat.

Is there no standards or protection against that activity?

Over here there mainly isn't but we do have the Australian Standards of Pruning 1996 which is what we try to work to. Do you have something similar that you might give him.

It's hard, I doubt many bosses would have your knowledge and expertise, becomes part of your job to educate the boss unfortunately. Print some stuff off the net about it if you're stuck, heck my website has a section called "stop before you lop" with pics and all ... give that to him.

Good luck.

I say if he is a jerk wont listen, the kinda guy that says my way or the high way, and wont take suggestion, take the highway. Especially if it bothers you that much you shouldnt have to go to work just to put up with BS, plenty of tree services, and people loking for seosoned guys.

Too right Timber, Tauranga is cut throat, many parts here are. Theres plenty of climbers willing to climb for peanuts! Just drags the industry down, especially when qualified guys do it.

I think thats a perfect idea, il start printing stuff off, and print some stuff on new gear that he needs also.

We work off the British standard which is excellent and is usually stuck to here in NZ. The thing is, the client and the boss both want the tree butchered so theres no one else but me to argue the job wasn't to the correct standard. Its like trying to swim up river with no arms!

Cheers mate.
