Came across these critters on my way to check how far the glaciers had receded on a bough sale road. This place belongs to some really good friends of mine and he (this reminds me) has my shotgun to fire those noisemaker things at the elk. It looks like they need to be reminded. Their slow elk are also in the field I didn't notice till I saw the pictures, but there's a spike in the midst too. MMMMMM, elk meat....mmmmmm good.

It's hard to tell by the cape, or a closer picture, but the one on the right may ce a bull that has just shed his antlers?

Even the deer are shedding antlers now, just a guess, but it (shedding) may have something to do with the first blades of green?

I grew up near Glenwood, WA and use to bow hunt elk out your way, Slowp. Elk meat is good stuff. Do you hunt?

No, but I like to eat elk. If I went hunting, I'd get mad if I didn't get one. And if I got one, I'd want it to be right by the road or better yet lure it into the bed of the pickup. Too big and too much work. I used to hunt pheasants
but just because they hung out behind my folk's place and I had a good dog.
The folks who have the land that the elk are hanging out in, have lived there since 1980. The elk didn't used to hang out there much but once the clearcutting stopped, well, they try to stay there year round and they are not welcome. That pasture becomes a hayfield soon. Last year there was trouble with poachers there. They shot the big bulls. :(

I've never tried Elk, but plenty of Moose meat round my area. Lately there's been more moose than deer. Of course Moose are deer but you know what I mean:) Imagine Elk is similar too moose? Oh and for sure about luring too the pickup! Almost need the skidder too get em out!

Elk is a lot better than moose, a lot milder of a flavor. It is hard to describe. It puts deer to shame too. Although I like moose and deer a lot, elk takes the cake for me.

Elk is the meat of the Gods!!! It is nothing like moose. It is a lot milder with just a hint of the "game" flavor. Not as dark either.:)

If all I ever ate again was elk meat... I would be a happy man.

Hmmmmmmmm, now I want me some!

Elk hunting frustrates the **** outta me!!!

I love the hunt, love the elk but hunt with my dad, uncle, and cousin in Oregon. Unfortunately I live right across the Columbia River in Washington. The frustrating thing is I have to buy a :censored: out of state license and tags even though I don't hunt in Washington and I work in Oregon therefore pay Oregon state income tax!!!

Just one of those things ya gotto do, thanks for letting me vent.

SlowP out of the goodness of my heart, and stomach, all you have to do is get a tag and shoot the elk and I will do all the rest. I'll split the meat with ya or bring you some wild Collyfornia hog meat. I wouldn't make this offer to just anyone. Though if anyone else has an elk problem just call me. The ranch we had a house on when I was a kid is one of the places the state reintroduced the Tule Elk. They are still off limits.

Yum

A friend at work has been going to Colorado bow hunting elk for years and usually brings one back. He dropped off some meat one day and after we ate it I have been bugging him to go along. Well this year I should draw a tag and have a chance to bag one. It sounds like a real adventure.

Cant wait to go.

Unless someone were real hungry.

No-one will eat deer if there is still elk on the table.

No-one will eat antelope if there is deer on the table.

People would get up from a table of antelope if they seen an elk walk by.

Elk are fussy about what they eat, they fallow the best eating year round, you can hunt by it.

Elk will even be seen in bigger numbers if someone fertilizes there pasture or hay fields well, or areas that a fire fertilized an area. My guess is that they need to be fussy to grow the racks that do in such a short time?

I read somewhere that is the fastest growing bone in the world.

I would not second guess that.

The elk here are low, and there is just a whiff of fresh green grass, so there shedded out (not the spikes yet)

So the new antlers will start coming in or really growing by the end of the month. And be rubbing velvet off by the middle - latter August or in 4 1/2 months.

Thats a lot of antler in say 20 weeks or less!

A friend of mine and big-time* guide Bob Gorman showed me a patch of grass while scouting mid-summer elk in guide school, that just the seed-tops have been eaten off. Bob said that 'huge' bulls will do that, as there system needs more protein then anything, were cow elk need the carbs (the rest of the grass plant) to make milk.

*Bob Gorman has guided top guns like Jack O'Connor, Jim Carmichel, and a slue of CEO's from around the world and big brass from Cabelias. And taught at Pikes Peak Outfitter Guide school for years.

Don't you realize that the elk just disappear during hunting season? You can't find them anywhere. I didn't see any being transported out last year either. There was a big frozen gutpile in the middle of the road during the tribal hunt though. I don't like the color of flourescent orange, it tends to wash out one's complexion. So, I guess I'd have to bow hunt and that just looks too hard. I hate elk season. I get flagged down and asked the annoying hunter questions. Where are all the elk? My answer, "Downtown Packwood." I did have a major trail located but then I was marking the timber out for a road which is now built where their trail was. They just up and disappear when hunting season arrives. Our little deers too.

so shoer, since you know Bob personally--we want to come out there to hunt with him--he give us a aboristsite discount???????????:) :) :)

I am not even sure Bob is guiding anymore, Pikes Peak Outfitter's is gone, Gary Jordan sold it and I have no idea what is happening with his area for hunts. It would be a safe bet that the new owners have that locked up?

Colorado is not hard to hunt, and more elk then anyplace on earth! Come on out and gettcha some!
