Merle was born in Bakersfield, CA. Not sure how much time he really spent OK. His parents were from OK. He saw johnny Cash play at Folsom. He was sitting in the audience.

I saw Johnny Cash on the side of hwy 99 atop some orange crates singing before a few folks at a roadside fruitstand. That was before he ever made it to the Cousin Herb show on TV in Bakersfield.
