Wonder if credits were added for the best thread each month or quarter would help quality of threads at all?

Maybe single thread in each forum with most reps received .. person who initiated the thread as well as highest two or three contributers each receive some sort of bonus.. maybe reset and done quarterly might work.

Might help to encourage quality threads.. would not necessarily reduce the lesser ones.. but hopefully increase the top ones.. That is now we are giving credits.. wonder if there is a way to give some for quality.

Sounds like a good idea.

There are a lot of very knowledgable guys in here, especially in this forum.

Lots of good ideas..

Unfortunately most of the guys (even the older ones - myself included with over 30 years in tree work) are simply talking for the sake of talking most of the time.. passes the time..

But like sitting around a fireplace smoking a cigar.. passes time.. but that is all.

There are some QUALITY posts however, and those should be rewarded.. I likely have only provided half a dozen in total since I have been on here :) But some do contribute a lot.

I am pretty sure that is what the REP points are about, and surprisingly enough not all people find the same post or threads Quality.

But how can you "quantify" quality. Number of replys, length of thread life - but threads get derailed a bit and that would still add to the quality? It's a good idea, needs to fleshed. Positive points to ya.

Very good post I already repped you so it will be a while. Perception can be limiting factor in judgment of content. One person likes husky the other stihl, one is a logger the other a climber and yet another a phc technician. It would be harder to fairly judge based off content if you are a homelight user and potato farmer.

All we have is reps.. so has to be based upon them.

But.. if somebody had response based upon scientific information, references to known experts or authorities, math formulas, references from known sources such as ISA (as one example), etc.. then I think the reps would come.

Not saying that other posts would not get reps for lesser comments, maybe the moderator of forum would be final selector behind scenes, but reps should be a good barometer for them.

Opinion and hollow arguments IMHO do not make quality posts..

That is true.. and a moderator would have to sit behind scenes once a quarter and sort through finalists maybe.

Good ones should float to top easily.

The rep limitations is something that would need to change as well, if this were to ever work.. or any of the reps for that matter. If somebody deserves a rep, then so be it, they should able to give one.. Now it can be abused I know, but so can anything.. even entering posts for the sake of getting post #s up.

Reliable Barometer

If a reliable way to measure thread quality can be found and implemented - ok even if it is 85-90% accurate..

Then it would go a LONG way to not only put this well in 1st place as an Arborist resource, but likely a long way to ensure it maintains that lead. Above all, this site, although we all enjoy the comradeship and chatter.. is a resource and a tool for us all to use. Something we did not have 20 or 30 years ago.. something we need to protect and try and improve. We all have a stake here, and we are all responsible to help make it better.. and we can if we work toward that common goal.

Some measure and reward would help to monitor it, encourage it and promote it.. but we all need to contribute and work together.

Frankly that is are more valuable reward than any other.

Posts for the sake of posting, new threads for the sake of new threads, reps for the sake of reps.. all hollow. It is a measure of quality we need.

Every single rep point I have ever gotten was due to me acting like a complete jackass so I am not sure about this. Ok , maybe not every single rep point.

Ok, how be we make reps with something added like 5 stars.. right now it is approve or disapprove.. then one could rate how high or good they thought the content was.

(even approve or disapprove is a start - but could be more granular)

Most certainly it would be subjected to abuse.

Quite likely. But.. the whole rep reward, post count reward and new thread reward is all subject to abuse.

Moderators would need to have final say.

Sure there are issues.. but from what I can see, no greater than are being opened up with the reward system.. I was just thinking if we are implementing rewards, lets see if we can use them somehow to stimulate even better input to some threads.
