It use to not mind the cold. In recent years however, the cold kicks the arthritis in my hands into high gear, so if its less than 0 I don't climb, and if below -10 (both in F), I don't like to strain the hydraulics on the bucket truck.

What really bothers me is pulling all the excess weight up the tree in cold weather, stiff ropes that are hard to tie, and sharing cab space in the truck with the bar oil. Cold weather and hycaulics don't mix too well either.

What I like about the cold, however is it makes me appreciate spring all the more. I could never understand how those in non temperate climates could enjoy any season over the other one. How can you appreciate 70 degrees, if you did not have to suffer with 20 below zero?

Looks like we got a warm up in the works for next week. Actually might get above freezing...looking forward to doing some of the more difficult climbs on the books then.

Where's :censored: AlGore when we need him ? :dizzy:

The only thing I like about this cold weather is when I am cold (I mean REALLY cold) close to the house, and then GET there, is my hot tub on the front porch. Then after about 5 minutes, I'm sitting there laughing at the cold wx.

Other'n that, I gots no use for cold....

Central Ohio
where it's 85 degrees and sunny (yeah, right. I wish)

16 degrees this morning in new orleans. got up just past 32 at one point. had decent pine to take down. Got her down, but I am not used to working in what I consider extreme cold. I don't know how you guys up north work in the winter. My hands were so cold I was having trouble tying a running bowline, feet went numb through the wesco's. every damm saw did not want to start!! hydrologics on the loader were even slow. However, I'll take it. it a nice change from august. 114 degrees with 97% humidity. But you guys up in michigan, new england, ect...snow, ice damm. how do you climb in this weather, what do you wear to work?

feet- marino wool socks and Lacross pac boots

body- long underwear bottom, light pants, long underwear top, t-shirt, flannel shirt, coveralls, short coat with hood.

Neck- false turtle neck

Head- hardhat liner

Hands- insulated gloves

Start removing layers starting with your coat, false turtle neck, and hardhat liner as you start to warm up.

This system has worked for me with temps down to -10 farenheit. I may have climbed in temps colder than that, but is against my better judgement.

Manage the layer system to avoid sweating, this will eventually freeze leaving you cold. Take along extra boots, socks, gloves, and hat in case you need to change them out. This can make or break your whole day in extreme cold.

frost on the pumpkin

you can't tell from the picture, but it was a little chilly that day. on top oof the weather the customer's neighbor called the cops on us for letting the trucks idle on the street and then (no joke) started to throw bits of her yard waste onto our brush pile. i told her half jokingly/half breathing fire that we were going to call the cops on her for trespassing near our chipper. some people just don't get it. luckily oldirty was there to set things straight. he denies it, but i'm sure i saw him give her his phone number and a kiss on the cheek.....

actually what really happened was i that i went through our pile and threw anything that didnt have a cut on it back into her yard.

lol.

i actually took the time to find her stuff and gave it back. (IE threw it all back into her yard.) to me it was worth the extra couple of moments it took. well worth it.

feel free to tell em what happened in medford the other day twp. thats an even better story. lol

key to buying socks.

look at the material breakdown.the more wool the better.screw all the acrylic and polyester and nylon.that stuff doesn't keep you warm.the thin liner socks seem to help me as well. i like Cabelas socks because they take them back if there is a problem,no questions asked,no matter how long you had them.BassPro has a "Lifetime sock" as well and i like them too.just no store here.i get them when i go to Michigan.

as for clothes, i like the stuff with Windshear and/or Gore Tex.mostly because it's not invented by AlGore! GoreTex actually works!

i remember talking to old hunters about staying dry and warm.they say to avoid cotton as much as possible.if you get wet wearing cotton, they say it turns to the "death fabric".it holds moisture and doesn't breathe or wick at all.plus it's heavy when wet. wool seems to work no matter what.
