Hello , I just started climbing out of necessity due to the ice storm that hit Ky . in Jan . I own a landscaping biz and always subbed out tree work . I own several acres of what was once beautiful trees , so I taught myself to climb . I bought climbing d.v.d's and some books , I practiced on some low stuff the moved up . I'm 47 now and in good shape , but after climbing ,all I have to say is you folks are real badasses ! The feeling of the adreanilin rush from climbing is addictive . I remember when I was about 8 yrs old I was staying with a babbysitter who let me out to play , when she came out I had climbed a 60 foot tree and was laughing sitting in the top , she was about to have a heartattack ! Hope to learn more here:clap:

Experience and practice is where you lean the most. Anyone can read. Just look at all the "Joe homeowners" doing their own tree work. :dizzy:

Welcome and good luck.

It sure beats a day in the office!

Good to hear you taking your time and staying low at the beginning. I always recommend an accredited climbing course as early on as you can to help you avoid starting off with bad habits. If you cant fit that in then spend a day or two with a skilled climber who talks about the safest way to climb not the fastest.

And welcome to the best gig on the planet!

Sounds like you're a natural, Tall Timber. Welcome to the site. Well, boys I'm "off to the races" this morning. A major, rare storm went through Fruitport and Spring Lake, MI, just down the road. Total devastation in many neighborhoods. 90-foot oaks tipped over, roots and all.

Welcome to AS pardner. I too started the same way you have(reading books, watching dvd's and going out to practice), but I have also been fortunate to make friends with a very experienced climber and arborist in my area (thanks Dave and Sylvia), and it is great to have somebody that is willing to help a greenhorn.

Welcome aboard. Many started the way you did and have become top rate climbers. Be safe, see ya' over the house tops.

Welcome

Anyone can benefit from this forum. You just have to use the information here wisely. I was taught by a real old school climber. AS brought me in to the new age of climbing and made me feel much safer and more confident. There is a ton to learn in here from some really good peeps.

Welcome

Welcome from North California! You're receiving good advice already!! By all means try to get together with an experienced climber to show you some of the basics. I started out with the traditional dynamic system using a Tauntline Hitch. Minimal equipment to start, then progress to a Split-tail with a Blake's Hitch....The sky is the limit when you start to accumulate gear!! Have fun here on A.S., I sure do!!:chainsawguy:
