Can anyone explain the requirements for purchasing a chainsaw in Ireland? I heard one needs to complete a safety course and show proof of this in order to do so.

Hows it going . I live in the north of Ireland and theres no problem buying a saw here . Although I wouldnt doubt your right cause I work in the south, and the health and safety regs are crazy.

Up here they give saws to anbody

One of them is a stihl man the other is a jonsered

Northern Ireland will be the same as the rest of the UK I suppose, you can buy everthing but a top handled saw from a retailer. You have to show a cert for these.

Consequently things like the MS 200T sell for a mint second hand on ebay.

It sounds like Eire is FUBAR by H & S, and you have my sympathy for that. It's going to kill industry.

My advice to you is buy what you want off ebay.

If you are buying in the UK (of GB and Northern Ireland) there should be no problem. Plenty of good deals mail order.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I have no problem as I live in the states, but my brother in law lives in county Offaly and has a sheep farm. Recent heavy winds over New Years brought down a lot of wood and he was thinking about picking up a new saw. I suggested purchasing over the internet myself. Still, I was interested in what the requirements were and what type of course one needed to attend.
