Is a blue Homelite XL worth fixing

I had an old Homelite Super XL given to me, one of the blue XL automatics, Is it worth restoring or should I just put a carb kit in it and run it as is. It looks to be a pretty nice saw, but I don't know much about it. Can anyone give me some specs on it.

as far as specs go to mike acres site and yes fix it helps me out when people fix there old equipment

That's about right. There are still too many out there to be valuable as a collector's item, with the exception of something like a NOS one. It seems ironic that the very fact that they were popular (and had unbelievable longevity) has contributed to their lack of value. Great saws... like Gary said, you should run it. Valuable or not, you'll be running a bit of chainsaw history. When it came out, building a powerhead that was that light, that durable, and that reliable was a singular feat. In magnesium castings, no less!

Well, you don't any money in it, so that's a great start. If it has spark and good compression...THEN, I'd buy a carb kit. If not, then I'd make it a door stop or put it in the classifieds for $15 or strip the parts off and sell them on ebay. You don't have many saws, so it might make good backup. Boy, I really helped a lot didn't I.

IPL = Illustrated Parts List shows the picture image of the saw along with part numbers in corrispondence to the # that is showing on the diagram


yep csw i have 1 piston left on the A68438 after that it will be hard to find cylinders are hard to find though but i have dealers holding parts for me till after April next year when i restart over in business

even though i have there parts list of part #s i rather not post them cause i cannot guarantee they will be there when the time arises


csw i wish i can find some homelite owners who will buy me out clear my shelves of these homelite parts i have on my store currently if they buy me out they get free shipping if they only ask ahead of time and give me a list of the part #s they want off there i would be glad to pay the shipping bill if that is what they are concerned about

sxl is a nice running saw, i own somewhere in the neighborhood of 12 of them, all of them in top running condition

If you're learning, that's as good a place to start as any.

Depending on the saw's condition, you might get it running tip top for under $150. That would beat any plastic mess you could buy from Home Depot.

I used my Old Blue 60's Homelite alongside my 70's Mac (loud) and Jonsered saws on a USFS contract in the 70's.
The Homelite outcut those by a lot. Old Blue was stolen and I replaced it with a new red one. No contest. I miss the blue one.
It's worth reviving if it doesn't need a lot.

A working ignition is a good sign, the coils are available and are still made but pricey enough to make someone without a ton of passion for the saw turn it to parts.
