Is our industry more accepted?

I think that as long as you are promoting quality tree care, then the public and clients will notice. The big thing is that it's up to us, as professionals, to stick by our ethics and principals to help our industry along.

I must say, every client I have had has not once mentioned to me that they could probably do it themselves. I make it a point to (without blabbering) explain to the homeowner why a cut needs to be made the way it does. Why we use ropes to rig, and most of all, why we can't just drop a tree from the ground and bill them less.

I inform each homeowner as much as possible that way if it comes up in a topic of conversation with there friends they can mention how extensive doing tree work is. Eventually, hopefully more then the average will know why tree work needs to be done right or the tree could most likely die.

TeamTree to touch on what you mention. I do infact try to talk the homeowner out of removing a healthy tree. I inform them as much as possible that way like I said they can evaluate there own situation and speak with friends and fill them in on the art that way when the friend needs tree work they don't try to butcher there trees themselves. Hopefully they call a professional and get good advice.

It could just be a legit tree company that has gotten slow and is trying to keep their guys busy instead of laying them off. It's very, very common in MI. He could just have a helper who is a good drywall guy. Keeping busy all winter doing interior work beats the heck out of collecting unemployment.

I agree that he is prolly just a good old working joe trying to make ends meet but the post definitely says something about his skill set. Anyone who is still advertising topping has had to have been living under a rock for the past 10 years.

My guess is he is one of the hundreds of ladder crew handymen out there that pack up and leave if something goes wrong. That's what gives the industry a bad name.

Forgive my inexperience, but I am assuming that topping a tree as a pruning method a no-no. I've only seen trees topped during a removal.

Sometimes trees have to be topped. Like when they are directly under a powerline and cannot be removed because of enviromental rules. Other times it is what the customer wants. I advise spiral pruning, but it doesn't always work.

Talking to each and every customer is key to getting the message of proper tree care across! Not badmouthing the practices of others but highlighting the importance of the methods of work in each job you do. Letting the customer come to the realization that you are the qualified individual to care for their tree or that you have the safe and practiced methods and equipment to remove the tree at a cost that is much better than the price of any funeral or emergency room visit at best. It is difficult when you live in an area where price is king and the court jester is pruning by the pound but for those who want their tree cared for properly they will seek you out... and refer you to their freinds and family.
