According to the stihlusa website, the recommended bar length for an 088, or 880 nowadays is a 21" bar. 660 is a 20". I once put a 20" on my 660 and the wood chips peeled the skin skin off my thighs

Wow, news to me. I run 32" on all the ms441 magnum. '15' pounds of power!
Got a Husky 3120xp with a 48" that kicks butt. But, really, the 441 is a great saw.
Jeff :)

looks like we are wasting money on them saws that chart says recommended bar is 25" on 460. Hmmmmm obviously something is amiss

That's awesome.

It's all about marketing a product. The mid-sized saws are sold as upgrades from the puny homeowner saws, so they MUST have a bigger bar, right?

The 880 comes with a puny bar, so that the dealer can quote as cheap a price as possible to close the sale, then charge you an OMG price $$$$ :jawdrop: $$$$ for the bar you really wanted.

:agree2:

Ridicules really. What pro here goes with the standard issue bar that comes on the saw??? I have had to upgrade every bar on every saw I have bought just about.

Odd. I have never had to do that. Of course most of mine have been homeowner types or used pro models.

Recent new saws:

MS210 - 16" bar
MS360 - 20" bar Max recommended at the time - 24"
MS 361- 25" bar. I did upgrade that one to a 28" for one tree but it is now back to 25". Max recommended 28"
