Hey NC,

You told me about a guy who somehow joined a left and right hand ascender together somehow. Could you explain how and why this was done? Thanks!

If you look at the Petzl Ascentree it's actually just two right handed ascenders riveted together. I often wondered why it costs $200 when in theory you could buy two right handed ascenders for $140 and rivet them together for a few cents. $60 for some rivets seems to be somewhat of a ripoff.

I have a friend in Wales who's been doing this for 10 years already...
The guy at DMM would send him kit to try in the real world and he joined those together...

I see, so he's ascending two ropes SRT style. I have yet to do that. Question though...if you had a doubled-over rope in the tree, why not just head on up DRT?

Unless you have a super long ascent I don't see the point either. If you can isolate your TIP you may as well go drt and work on your way up. Not all these shiny pieces of kit are worth it plas. I read the article but still can't see why having the double ascender is any better than a single and just going up srt.

Here's a link to the article I read in TCI magazine

http://viewer.zmags.com/publication/151d2127#/151d2127/10

That TCIA article is by Tree Machine. Notice the picture at the lower left of page 12 is the same as the picture below from of his post last July.

If you really want answers from THE "guy who somehow joined a left and right hand ascender together somehow." He's the guy!!! He's a pro with some very valuable points even if some "still can't see why".

I contemplated buying that $200.00 Petzl dual ascender for SRT. Before I did I just attached a short 1" endless loop to a left hand ascender for my right hand. Now if I can just get that single line footlock mastered I can save the price of a foot ascender.

I stopped reading about joining the ascenders together when I heard something about JB weld. The joined ascenders made by Petzl differ from the single ones I think.

I hear you, but I'm pretty sure the JB Weld is not serving any life support function whatsoever (?)

Did you read the article? I pretty sure he has isolated his TIP like you would if you are tied in. Instead of using 2 SRT lines he is climbing DRT. Working the tree with the ascenders instead of a hitch. I have a buddy that has been doing this for years too the only thing is the ascenders are one unit with no back up pussik. He is able to ascend and descend the tree as he is working it. I could only see this valuable if you were climbing alone and couldn't climb SRT. I haven't experiemented with ascender as a means to work the tree so I don't know if it's worth it. If TreeMachine is on AS I would ask him more about. I just thought it was an interesting article.

I correct myself it can be used for SRT, DRT, or twin line DRT ascending. It not ment to be used as a means to descend but to use as a downward adjustment as if you were limb walking and didn't have your full body weight on the rope.
