I inherited a jonsered 52 which is in great shape except it has no spark. I changed the plug to no avail. A friend told me it had great compression and that the points could be the problem. He took off the fly wheel and said the points are opening and closing as they should. Where should I look next? I don't want to spend alot of money on this saw? Thanks

Check all your wiring and make sure everything is clean and grounded good. Make sure the gap between the coil arms and flywheel are correct. If the points are good and the wiring is good, the coil is tight and positioned right then most likely you have a bad condenser. Also your on/off switch may be bad as well. Unplug it and then see if you have any spark.

Try filing your points or cleaning them off with emmory cloth. I prefer to remove them and spend some time filing until the contacts are flat and shiny.

Thank you so much for the information. The switch was tested and it works but I will try the points cleaning after work. I'll keep everyone posted.

As Scott said above, make sure the points are clean. Even if they are opening and closing, they may not actually be making electrical contact. A good multi-meter is handy to have to make sure. Use a file or emery cloth. You may also want to check the capacitance of the condensor.

Good luck,
Dan

Yes, the points were filthy. Cleaned up the best I could now I have spark but runs a little rough. How do you adjust the points without taking off the flywheel everytime? Also is there someone in Connecticut that sells new points for this saw? Thanks everyone for the information.:) :)

George Blake explained the procedure to me once. It sounded pretty complicated if you didn't have the right tools(especially if you wanted it exact). Have you thought of converting to electronic ignition? Do a search and you should find some good information regarding the topic.

Since my points are working, I just set them in the middle of their adjustment and it seems to work well. Maybe, if you filed some material away, you might want to close the gap a little more.
