I drive by my neighbors house this evening and see his pickup truck fully loaded with cut fire wood....and a chainsaw laying on the ground close to the curb suggesting that it fell out of the truck. I call him up and tell him that he lost his saw and he explains that it won't run and he wants rid of it and please take it if I want to.

Don't need to tell me twice....I needed a new toy anyway and agreed to play with it. So far I have determined that the fuel was stale, and by his description the starter rope pulls "harder than hell" and there is no spark. This is where I stopped tinkering with it so I could spring these questions on you guys:

(1) what age is this Jonserd model 801?
(2) what is the Husky equivalent?
(3) are these models given to ignition problems?

Now off off to the shop again to check out the ignition. Since the compression is good I'm thinking it'll run if I can get some fire in the hole.

Let 'er rip fellows, I'll be back later to see what you think.

:givebeer:

BTW - the pickup truck full of wood was cut by a Stihl - the John Red had nothing to do with that!

Thanks guys!

Here is the most current condition report for the 801:

The rope pulls hard because the engine is BIG and the cylinder was dry. That was cured with a little light oil in the cylinder....much smoother pull now.

When I started looking this saw over I had no idea how old it was but have come to expect electronic ignition on most things these days. After looking at the link to Mike Acres site (above) I realized the saw should have breaker points. I'm thinking that will be no problem so I pop the covers and flywheel and presto, no points! Someone had done a retro fit electronic ignition with one of those funky universal "ATOM" modules and herein lies the ignition problem, or the other possibility is that the coil has failed. I get to dig in to the art and science of those ATOM modules next to see what I can learn.

Save for the ignition problem, this saw should run. It has a $**** load of compression!

Later!

If it was my saw I'd try replacing that old Atom chip with a new Nova unit. They cost about $15 or so. The 801 is a desirable saw, lots of power and very dependable. If you decide to re-home it I'd like to see some pics.
