Hello All, Just get back from a tuesday flea market, thought I would get out at lunch, weather has gotten nice. Came back with an 028 AV Super for $100, started on first pull, sounds good, looks better. I'm gonna be in big trouble. Ever since I've found this site (3-4 months ago) I've bought Shindiawa 488, Stihl 017, 024av, 039, 041av, Husky 55r and now 028 super. How do all of you get your saws in the shop without getting caught? At first I told her, "This is my new money making project" but she has caught on that I buy but not sell. Oh Well.... Can someone tell me how this 028 should compare to the 039? Can't find rated hp on the 028 anywhere on the web. First I'll operate on the muffler tonight and give it a good going over. Thanks, Lee

A good tight 028 will still bring $200+ even though they haven't been made in years. Power for a stock 028 should compare to a newer 026 with muffler mods.
You got a good deal. That's one of the best saws Stihl ever made in my opinion. Next to the 038Magnum, of course.

New Favorite Saw !!!!

Just got home, new gas, new sparkplug, cleaned filter(clogged), pulled muffler(screen 1/2 carboned), decarboned exhaust port, matched gasket, adj. carb. No scratching on piston or cylinder. Has been run rich from looks on top of piston, but not all that bad, no buildup just dark colored. WOW this thing RUNS!! I believe its as stout as my 039. Sure sounds better. Revs QUICK. I have a couple of questions. 1. Where is oiler adjustment? Its not on bottom like 039 and its not on top of crankcase like 041. 2. Muffler is different on the inside than any of the others. I've searched all achives and can't find one that addresses muffler mods on an 028 Super, any help on opening it up is greatly appreciated. And last, is this saw a good canidate for full mods from one of the Saw Gods on this site? What percent of improvement can be gotten out of this saw? Thanks in advance. Great Site, I read it everyday...I think I got an addiction? Luv Those Saws

I had the opportunity a couple weeks ago to run a used 028 I took on trade against a like new 026 or 260, can't remember which. The 026/260 won, but not by a big margin.

Chain, of course, would have been a variable.

My guess would be the 028 is near the 3.0 hp mark.
