Hi guys in my last thread I said I had my mind set on an 028AV Super. I was shopping around dealerships today browsing at chainsaws and came accross the 034 sitting there with a price tag of $325 NZD I asked if I could start it up to check how well it was running and it started with no problems and idled happily while it was warming up and managed to talk the guy down by $50 dollars . I am in the process of taking the 16" bar it came with off and replacing it with an 18"bar.When I got it home I went to retension the chain and found that the chain tensioner gears were slipping and when rotating the chain by hand I can hear a clunking noise so I will be going through and replacing the chain tensioner and the roller bearing that sits under the clutch cover that is all I could find wrong with it. also I was wondering how to identify what year it was made as there are no tags on it apart from a serial number that sits above the bar cover.

Found out what year the saw is, and have replaced the chain tensioner, found that the two cogs inside the chain tensioner housing were stripped by the last owner cost me $27 to fix so it wasn't too bad. Also I have spotted a cyclinder and piston kit for sale it says it fits the 034 super would this safely fit the 034AV only thinking of getting it so it is there when I need them

Don't know for sure if the "super" kit will fit your saw. I do know that it's a bigger bore and will give you a little more horsepower. Sounds like you got a good buy. THe kit might sit on the shelf for a lot of years, you may never need it...............

PWB yes i did get a good deal but it was a shame I had to replace the chain tensioner but that was no big deal IMHO I do need to replace the roller bearing inside the clutch housing as I can only hear the clunking noise when I rotate the chain by hand I can not hear any other bearing rattles when running the saw or while it is idling. Stihltech thanks for the info at least I can have piece of mind in buying the 034 super piston and cylinder kit I don't think it would hurt having a fresh start with a brand new cylinder and piston. Hopefully I can finish cleaning all the years of crap off the saw today

Bailey's is a good spot to order parts for the 034. I replaced roller bearing, rim spocket and rebuilt the carb with parts from them. Put a new filter on it and it will really go. Opening up the muffler doesn't hurt either.

You may need to change the muffler also. I've changed a few 034's and 034S to 036's and apart from the top shroud (obvious), I got caught on some of the mufflers. There are about 5 different mufflers over the life of the 034, and you can end up with it protruding about 2-3mm forward. If you fit spacer washers to tie the muffler back to the frame at the bottom (bad idea) you'll then have a problem with the top shroud melting against the muffler!

just finished cleaning most of the crap off the saw (ned to do the rest with a compressor and air duster) took it to my stepfathers to test it out on a couple of stumps and I am very impressed with the way it runs and performs. the cylinder head is in need of a darn good clean as there is residue on there that starts to smoke a little so I want to get that cleaned off as it smells like burning oil it is not too bad with that part but a clean saw is better than a dirty saw
