One of my competitors walked into my shop today, stating that he needed the money to pay off the tax service; selling a MS 200T. Said he wanted $225.00.

I looked real close, it was pristine! Hanging from the pull rope, it didn't even offer to turn over. Really crisp & tight, it had obviously never been banging around in a toolbox for very long.

I didn't quibble over price, I just went to the bank and paid him. He signed a cash sale ticket, and I am quite confident that no one is missing their saw.

We talked shop on the trip, so it was a pleasant excursion as well.

Think I did well?

[My previous "second 200" is in parts; it is only junk now. I am particularly pleased to have a second horse in the climber's corral again, so I guess I am just crowing a little. Now all I need is some tree work to use it on...DAMN the economy!]

Sad story, I almost would have given him 225 dollars worth of work to do before I bought the saw.
Good deal for you though.

...

He(ck) no. If I had $225 worth of work to do, I wouldn't have been there to buy it, I'd have been out making the money to buy it with.

Besides, this guy wasn't really too much of a tree man anyway. On the way to the bank, he was telling me that he really wasn't a climber, and that if it got too high on the ladder, he would get his electric chainsaw on a stick, and one-hand the contraption to make his cuts.

Maybe I did him a favor by keeping the savage little 200t out of his hands.

Doesn't sound like much of a competitor? Did well on the saw.

Yes, now that we have cleared that up I don't feel so bad.

See what I mean by imppecable words PD? Since you said he was one of your competitors we thought he would have pretty much the same skills as you and be on your level.
You should have said " I just relieved this poor wretched bastard from his saw".

You most likely did and that car ride must have made your day!

That's crazy, I had almost the the exact same thing happen last week. The guy said he was moving up north to plant tree's not cut them down, said saw was too heavy and was hard to bring into the tree
Saw looks like he never used it, and I gave him 300.00.

Here's to getting 200t's for half price.

If they make money doing tree work of any sort, they are getting jobs that I could be doing. That makes them a competitor.

Quite frankly, there are a lot of big tree services in this town that look down their noses at my little company, figuring that I am not competition either.

Well, I am, just not very much competition.

I wrote here a few weeks ago I picked one up for $175 with maybe a cpl tanks through it. I also picked another one up last week same story, along with at least $1500 of new rigging and climbing gear all for a grand. These are the times to be buying equipment if you have the means... Survival of the fittest.

I thought I did good getting a brand new MS192T demo for $200.00. Dealer used it as a demo and never got sold...

You have a decent equipment list, besides the lack of a chipper. You shoulda ponied up for the 200T. The 192 feels like a toy in comparison.

Next deal you see on one, pick it up for me... I'm taking a trip to Boston in the Spring. :)

I've got 3 of them now... If I keep my eyes open, probably 3 more by spring. I'll save one for you at cost.......

Cool, I'll take you out to eat... God I miss the seafood in New England...

Sweet, I dive for lobster in the summer months, I'll chuck some on dry ice and send them to you......

There's a place in the North End on the water called the "sail loft" that does twin 1.25's with mussels for $29 bucks.....

Do that and I'll send you some Black Angus beef back, my uncle raises it here.

When I left Boston I was getting chic lobsters for $4 bucks a pop. They want $40 bucks for one here.

North End has better Italian than Italy. Last time I was there I ate at this little corner neighborhood joint and it was absolutely the best Italian I have ever eaten...

LOL, we used to sneak into the old Garden to watch the Celtics when I was a kid... We also used to scale the wall at Boston Common to see the outdoor shows. Saw CSN&Y there.
