I phoned our intrepid Mr Greffard this week and ordered a new saw...just cannot beat those prices he offered. What a decent guy to visit with on the phone, too!

Anyway, to the point: I let it slip that my old favorite saw, the Jonsered 670 is tired and old; I abused it last saturday and must have momentarily siezed it...lost power and the compression had dropped from about 125 to about 90. I lifted the jug; the ring is stuck and there's a lot of black on the piston, except a nice gouge, and a thin streak of fresh aluminum near the exhaust port in the bore.
The kicker is that I've used it a long time, and the rod feels "sorta loose", and I can see shiny wear on the bearing cage around the crankpin. The rotating assembly is not long for this world I fear.
Talking to Dennis, I mentioned that I probably will get rid of it, he expressd genuine concern that I should not...he likes the 600 Jonsy's (Me too).

So here's the question: If I hunt up the parts (Cyl/piston assy, crakshaft assy w/ seals, etc.) and add a clutch, a few other goodies I will probably spend US$500 or a little more. Now that it would be basically new, there would be the temptation to send it to BC for a little TLC...freight both ways and massaging costs...$200?

I can get a nice shiny new 2171 for less, maybe even wait to see if E-lux puts red shrouds on the 385 xp for about that amount of $$$. I could probably get $75 for the old saw on e-bay even if I was dead-honest about the expected lifespan of that old saw!

Tell me why I'm even considering restoring it?

eyolf, i sense your pain. normally i would offer to come up there and get that saw, but, I sware, this is DJ-VU, part it, if we are talking about a 670, ...depart,

you should be able to pick up an aftermarket pist/cyl assy for that 670...I havent liked them...but mike acres and several others here on the site have had very good luck with them...

*dont put the lil red girl down...*

Thanks for the info, Mike. Who sells the aftermarket parts...Stens, Blue streak, ?

I'm not going to have time for a while to do any work on it, but I could be calling around and ordering parts.

What's the difference between a 266 and a 268 Husky? I've got a jug for a 268 that fits on the 670 case, but has the finger (open) ports. I'd have to get a husky carb boot, and probably a husky carb, too...the 268 is apparently made to use an integral pulse connection, while my 670 has an external line.

I'm not that excited about the husky jug, anyway.

My 670 jug has no scratches, but does have a wipe of aluminum about 1.5 mm wide stuck in it. I might try to boil it out with acid before I decide. MY big worry is that the rod feels a little loose.

I thought that the 670 and the 266 used the same crank.I have a few of the 670s but dont have any husky cranks to compare it with.Maybe Dennis can help on this one.

The same crank shaft is used in the 61, 162, 66, 266, 268, and 272 Husqvarnas as the 630/670 Jonsered. I would personally rather have a 272 than a 670 (same weight, more power) but if you have a crank for any of the mentioned saws you can interchange them. Mike

Am I to interpret that to mean I could scrounge up a good crank and of course a 272 jug and piston, send it to one of our friends for tweaking, and have what looks for all the world like an old plain-vanilla 670...but is a real giant killer?

To heck with that shiny new 2171.

Bwa ha ha ha ha ha.

:) the 272 can be very fast....I just happen to have one of the fastest 272 cylinders around...it was built by our very own Ken Dunn..and happens to be his first cylinder as well....I will be racing the 100cc class with it May 11...with Uncle Arts chain of course....should be interesting if nothing else....

Hi Dennis, I got the same saw, but on alcohol, with uncle Art's chain it will blast you away. Big words for a guy that doesnt hold the saw yet. Till then, I can crosscut an Apple Fritter to serve 6.
You Con John from Ontario
