Although there is a lot of "line clearance guys are hacks and butchers" type of comments here I am not ashamed to say I do line clearance. Just curious as to how many here trim for line clearance?

I did it for the first 10 years or so. It was okay, but after awhile I was starting to feel like a glorified lawnguy. It was fun swinging around in a bucket all day, though!

Climbing on ROWs was fun, also. You can get some good experience with rigging thataway.

I DO

I trim for hydro lines been doing it for 13 years and am proud to say so, with out me and guys like me your computers wouldnt work to type such outlandish things about us.

ive been doing it for five years thinking about trying to get a job other then line clearance. some place where they teach modern aboriculture instead of there saying make do with what you got with cheap climbing equipment.

I would like to do residential work full time but it comes down to a money issue. I am very fortunate that my area has a good union and that means good pay and benifits that are very hard to find in the private side of the business.

No need to get so defensive, ROW maintainance is an important needed thing. Trees are cool, but we are at the top of the food chain the last I looked! :)

didnt intend to come of as defensive, I never take anything to heart. next time I will put a LOL at the end.

Hey I gotta axe - why do you refer to it as 'hydro'?

I know why I call something hydro, but I don't its quite the same thing. ;)

no I cut tree limbs not pinch buds back lol one of the major utilities around is Ontario Hydro and I grew up with parents that payed the hydro bill. Just force of habit I guess.

I did for 3.5 years. Enjoyed the climbing. Saw a lot of pretty country clearing taps.

i do lineclearance. although i do not plan on doing it the rest of my life i think it is good as long as you do it right at dont destroy the tree

I do line clearance. On and off for 13 years. I also cut logs a few years.

Mike

Thats bull$hit! Anytime, anywhere. If that bossman can't get it together enough to make payroll when payrolls due he shouldn't be ANYONES bossman.

Friggin idiot!!!

This seems to be quite a common occurance in this business. Company Number One was chronically late with paycheques shortly before closing for good, and Number Three I had to take to court to get my $$$$. So if line clearance pays the bills on time, and gives some stability in employment sounds like a good deal IMHO. Gr8, even better, if you on get on with a private company that is solvent, is interested in employee development, uses modern methods, and treats people like they would be wanted to be treated themselves.

Hey ya'll line clearance guys!

How much is bucket, and how much is climbing?

When I did it, it was about 50/50.

Sthil the same, or what?

Depends on the area. Where I work as you get to the more developed areas there is more climbing. As you get to the countryside, there is more bucket work. Also depends if you work for a sissy foreman that is afraid to get the truck stuck. I say if you never get stuck you will never know what you are capable of driving through!
