This is not a writing forum nor am I a professional so excuses me!!!! But why in your right mind would you Condone this type of behavior.

This is not some hack trying to start a tree service (that's a whole different issue) this is a home owner looking to do his own tree work let's make that CLEAR

Would you let one of your groundies buy a ton of gear tell him to read a book watch some YouTube and just put him in tree. I don't think so

No one should just buy equipment especially a homeowner and just start climbing without a professional to train and teach you while under supervision. Most of us guys wait years before were taught me included. It took 2year before I bought a pair of spur working for the boss man Now I am on my own but this has nothing to do with it.

come on who starts climbing with 3000 dollar worth of gear don't get me wrong he pick out some nice gear.

But you have to think am I a little in over my head buying $3000 dollars of equipment I can say most of the guys on this site have less money in gear

When will people learn to leave this work to the professional who have knowledge and experience to do it safely...
I hate to break it to ya buddy, but climbing trees isn't rocket science or biomechanical engineering. I love how some tree guys think they have the most complicated job in the world . Sure, you can get hurt or **** up your trees, but the learning curve is a lot steeper than something like nuclear physics. If he wants to buy some gear and have at it fine, it's a free country (mostly).

Remember that bumper sticker,"Just do it". I'v always been a firm believer in that. Do I think people who with out no clue take on a job that is way beyond there skill or knowledge level, risking life and property damage, doing unnecessary harm to their trees, not overly realistic? sure. But that's not to be confused with someone who study's and research's a subject he doesn't know tell he has a good understanding of it before he attempts it. He'll make mistakes sure ,but so do I after 30 years..
I as a hobby ocean kayak fish. I read everything I could about it, got me a kayak, practice tipping it over and getting back on in a lake, then took it to the most extreme place I could, launched through high surf and haven't looked back, am I an idiot, Oh yeah, proud of it. Burn up our central air conditioning doing my own repairs. But I also got a few extra years out of it. I hate auto repair people, 90% of them are dishonest in my eyes, I bought books use the computer and collected tool, I am a pretty good diagnostic and repair guy now.
I took a job as a groundsmen 34 years ago for 3.75 an hour. they were removing a palm tree that leaned over a out building, I heard the climber was getting a 100.00 to climb it. When he showed up and said he couldn't do it, I was up that thing a half hour later. They pulled so hard on it when I took the top it whipped back and forth with a purpose.
I let go of the saw and it went flying as I bear hug the palm. I can't believe they let me do it, but I'v been climbing ever sense. I feel I can do almost anything, but don't do nothing with out learning everything I can about it. Do I over run my ass sometimes, well sometimes, I'm not afraid to fail. If you attempt something, intelligently, and with the proper tools and knowledge, and determination, that's smart, If you realize at some point it's not for you, that makes you even smarter. Don't confuse that with jumping into something you don't have a clue about thinking you can do it because it looks easy

Great post, Wade. I was never a ground guy,, my dad had a friend owned a tree co and had me climbing at 16 years old, never looked back. My dad just wanted me to make some money at stay out of trouble, I got addicted. He said to me years ago that tree climbing is not a real job. If he was alive now, I think he would be proud of me.

Great post, always nice to hear how people got into the industry, especially with a story like that. And that's a pretty good philosophy to go by. I've done all sorts of construction, roofing, framing, pipeline, electrical, drywalling, swingstage, plumbing, etc etc and bought tools for the jobs along the way. But one thing I REALLY suck at, and don't enjoy at all, is drywall mudding. Can't seem to master that one, so I'll probably hire someone else to do that in the future. Do I regret trying? Of course not. How can you know what you are good at and what you enjoy without trying?
