Why do I need a filter for a log splitter also what about microns in filter ratings and gpm thru the filter I have no filter hook up yet to my splitter also does it connect to the oil reserve it has a 12 HP kohler with a 16 gpm pump maybe I need yo get a bigger pump. Thank you for any replys. Mr.Stihl

A filter for log splitters is normally 10 micron and is placed in the return line to the reservoir. The 12 hp. engine will handle up to a 22 gpm 2-stage pump.
If you already have the 16 gpm pump, you may want to stick with it. When using a 22 gpm pump every thing must be sized accordingly in order to work properly. Reservoir, filters, hoses, and control valve must be increased in size to accept a 22gpm pump at double the cost.

Look under fluid power basics at this site for some general info.
