One of my splitters just started moving slow forward after bogging down on a twisty piece of firewood. It's a 2 stage pump. If it moves slow only in one direction is that more likely to be a control valve issue?

Plugged hydraulic filter
Whether the ram is going forwards or backwards it's still draining through the same line that connects to the hydraulic filter. So if it was a plugged filter I would expect the symptom to be present for both extend and retract wouldn't I?

Is there anything in these two stage pumps that could lead One direction on the ram being slow? It doesn't seem possible it's got to be in the splitter valve I'm guessing.

@edrrt you are correct, the filter is still on both sides and is only on the return from the valve, and yes there is a possibility of a pump issue depending on which way is now going slow, also could be a valve issue or a messed up cylinder, be that packing or rod, we need more info.

I had a similar issue with my splitter and it ended up being a piece of plastic stuck in the intake side of the hydraulic tank. You could hear the pump working extra hard to pull the fluid from the tank, which could be your clue if it’s suction or pump related.

oil pickup or the filter could be clogged, try pulling the filter off and blowing compressed air through the pickup via the filter mount orifice and replacing the filter. It could have a blockage in the valve if the filter started to come apart internally or if the valve is getting stuck in the valve body, valve body is worn. I would also suspect a bypass to have possibly failed after a strenuous use but the pump noise means its either over working or under oil fed.

Well false alarm.

I went over to look at it prepared to troubleshoot everything described here based on the symptoms relayed to me.

However the problem was obvious. So much so I don't know why they couldn't figure it out.

Ham fisted idiot got the log stuck on the end, then retracted it, without lowering the log dislodger and from the looks of it successfully dislodged the log against the controls bending everything.

Then I get the report it mysteriously doesn't go forward anymore, for some reason.

Rediculous.

Towed back to the shop, tomorrow I'll get it all straightened out.
