Finally managed to get a local logger to drop 2 loads of logs today! Have been waiting all summer -mostly because of our wet summer here. These are from a new-to-me logger. I found him by an ad in a local pennysaver. Price was steep -compared to last year (different guy). $675 first load -$650 second load. Price drops $25 each load to min of $600. Claims to be about 16 ton and claims I should get about 16 -18 face cords (5-6 full cord) depending on how its cut of course. Only a couple of monsters -thank God!!

Good looking wood. Whatcha got there? Some oak and what else?

But did I get those numbers right? You paid $1250 for 5-6 cords? That comes out to $225-$250 per cord? That's pretty expensive wood by my local standards. I can get a cord split and delivered around here for $150-$175. What's a split cord run in your area?

That is steep

I guess that is pretty steep. Not sure what a split cord if going for in your neck of the woods, but I am selling it for 200 a cord delivered in a 20 mile radius, and for logs I can get a semi trailer for 875 which is about 10 to 11 cord. Got some work ahead of you to get it all cut drying.

Not 5-6 cords

Based upon my 25' long delivery which was about double each of your deliveries, I would bet 4 cords at most for each. Check out my pics
http://www.arboristsite.com/showthread.php?t=74255 the one with the logs stacked has about 2 cords cut from it, so what is left should be about 6 cords.
I hope for your sake I am wrong and you end up with what he promised you. Let me know how it turns out.:greenchainsaw:

Nice stuff

I forgot to mention that is nice wood though. Based upon personal experience those are real nice to work with (except that big HONKER on top, my guy pulls the same thing) Cut that big one off the top first as you don't want it to roll off and kill someone who is cutting near it. It's kind of like that game JENGA except with chainsaws:cheers:

the price was $675 first load -approx 16 -17 face cord (@16" should be 5-6 full cord). Second load was $650 -same size. Therefore $1325 for 32 - 34 face cords (@16" should be 10 -11 full cord) Last year I paid $500 per load .

by my math -which isn't very good -that should get me down to about $41 per face cord or $123 per full cord. And I usually sell some in front of the house -picked up only. Probably have to move to $60 or more this year per face cord. That helps get the cost of my heat even lower.

Your math seems pretty good, and I think you got a good buy. Now you can cut it all to exactly the length that you want for your stove, split it all to the size that you want, and get all the exercise that you want.

That alone is worth a bundle! :yourock:

Worth it

+1 , Great Point...the ability to customize your wood and get a great workout is all part of it. I have plenty of wood on my own lot but get grapple loads because they are cut, limbed, and stacked in my work area. For the price of my TIME alone it's worth it, not to mention I'm NOT cutting my own trees! Don't forget to measure your time into any equations here. If you make much more per hour working than cutting wood, you might want to pay for it split. For me I like the work...and it's a great justification to shamelessly justify buying new saws!!!!!!!!!!!!:greenchainsaw:

Where in NY are you located? I live in Wayne County (between Rochester and Syracuse) and haven't had any luck finding anyone to deliver log loads.

If I understand your math correctly, you paid 41 bucks per face cord, and then going to sell it for 60 after you cut, split, and stack?
Doesnt seem to be a lot after you take your expenses out like fuel, wear and tear on your equipement, etc.
I dont know about you, but I figure about an hours work to cut, split, and stack a face cord.
Maybe I am a little slow? How long does it take on the average per face cord?

Okay, I see where my mistake was. I thought you were saying 5-6 cords for the TOTAL of two loads. That was per load, so you cut the price in half.

Much better! And more fun your way. Mine is all free for the hauling, but it's odd lengths, mostly around "too long for a good splitting round but too short to make two good splitting rounds". Means I burn a lot of odd chunks! :D

Good stuff! I wish I could lay my hands on some of that locust!

 NIce load of logs:cheers:

$120/cord, 10cord order includes delivery. One truck load equals 10cord+.
Mix of wood from a sawmill, all hardwood lumber logs.
Just go out in the back field, cut/split/stack. Clean wood, keeps the chains in better shape, work when its convenient, safer(vs. working alone in a forest), don't need to own a truck/trailer, etc.....
It can be a good way to go.

Split, dried, delivered, all oak is around $200/cord, for an 8cord load, semi dump trailer. Takes all the fun out of it, but it would still be far cheaper than LP for us, if I was injured or couldn't do this anymore, it would be next best choice.

no brush to pile or clean up ? and it's delivered ?
Yip saweet ! Face cords in the winter can bring $100 undelivered. Right now it's running 55-75 undelivered for a third cord. Few people actually buy it more than 1/2 cord ($110) at a time.

The closest we have to timber here are the fencerows and some blackjack oaks to the far South and East. Kinda hard to go logging in wheat and the river bottoms are pretty much tied up.

Chainsaw Jenga , LOL gotta love it !!!. Work safe.

heh...i thought it was total too. my math had it between $220 to $265 per cord, and i thought what the heck...did i figure wrong?? lol

nice haul tho.

Nice looking wood, I especially like the smaller sized logs.
Most of mine are 24-36" or so.

Mine was $600 for 8 cords. 100% Oak. Usually is more than that here in MA

Hey parrothead!!!
Where did you get your load in MA.
I bought from a place in Abington, and am looking for a second supplier.
Anywhere near the Southg Shore?

Thanks
Bob
