I need the case and bar cover for a model 80. My saw runs great, but the bar studs, which had previously been helicoiled, stripped out and along with the cover are long gone. Thought that if I could pick up the case and cover for the right price, it could be worth salvaging.

If it runs good you should be able to get bar studs in there. Drill and tap it at a bigger size, helicoil again, or JB Weld the darn things in there. That would be easier than swapping internals

That's a funky-looking saw. Did the previous owner repaint the top black, or did Jonsey make the last ones with that color scheme? I'm used to seeing them with the old silver tops.

Multiple Heli-Coils or a sturdier type of insert (search through fastener catalogs to find all sorts of kinds) may very well work. Try that before new parts. After that, see what George Blake has to say in the parts area. He fixed me up with all sorts of little bits for my Jonsey, and 80s are more common saws.

I'll never understand what you guys see those compact Jonsereds. :)

In any event, I would like to find a bar cover and studs. Am I over simplifiying it, or is the engion not removable once I split the case open? I was just assuming it wouldn't be that big of a deal.

The other problem is that there are cracks in the metal around the stud holes. i took photos, but they are hard to see.

Oregon Rob, the part that you want to replace IS the engine block. Changine the cases on this saw is about the most complicated job you can do to it. I'd try a "Time-Sert" or two and replace the missing clutch cover. You may want a saw shop or machinist to install the time-serts. These are a soilid thread insert not wimpy coil of wire. Also who is tightening the bar nuts. Magilla Gorilla?

And If I were being a wiseguy I'd say you already got a dead model 80. But I'm not a wiseguy lol.

Good Advise to contact George blake a.k.a. motosag He's a member here, and THE Jonsered source.

Thanks for not being the wise guy.
Timeserts sould like a good idea.
When you say clutch cover, I thought that was the part under the sprocket???
This was my first saw, back when I was 18-19. I made misstakes, mostly by letting too many people use it. Now I just can't let it go that easy.

Any one got a link to an exploded drawing that will help me understand the way the part go together.

I would guess that you're used to working on older pattern saws, right? Lots of classic designs had engines that were more or less separate. Most made since the '60s put everything in one casting. In Jonsereds' case, the crankcase and AV mounts are one assy, the oil and gas tanks are another. It's a royal pain just to get the two apart, let alone tear into the case. However, it can be done if all else fails. Try the inserts first. Do the cracks get to the oil passages?

"Bar cover" and "clutch cover" are interchangable words for the thing that goes over the bar and clutch. By "part under the sprocket" I would assume you mean the clutch drum.

In a side note, why does everyone use threaded studs these day? Homelite had it all figured out years ago. T-nuts going into the gas tank. You'd have to tear the saw in two before they would come out.

You guys are a lot of help, thanks. after looking things over,
I Will NOT be tearring into the saw, unless I get to the point where I give up and just want to see inside.

I e-mailed George.

And yes, I need a clutch cover, although I could make one up if it comes to that.

My main reason for trying to fix this beast up is for a back up milling saw and for use with the Mini-mill.

Regards,

Rob

OK, So if anyone can help with the clutch cover and studs, please let me know!
I would assume that the clutch cover is used for other similar vintage Jonsereds, anyone know which saws or the PN of the cover I am looking for?

Rob

George contacted me and has determined that the saw is a model 801 and will be shipping me the parts. Thanks for all the help!
