Bought a used Simington sharpener recently and got several rolls of chain with it. Looking for a good source of links to spin out some loops. Got a roll of 3/8 .063 full skip Stihl and two rolls of 3/8 .050 chain to work with.

Do your best to get links specifically for the chain you're joining. There can be subtle but significant differences between manufacturers & even between different profiles from the same brand.

I guess I should have been more specific. Looking for brands/vendors/ recommendations of good sources. Lots of info out there for sure on sizes, etc for different chains. Looks like a lot of link will work with the Stihl chain since their links do not change with different gauge chain . I will check with a local Stihl dealer with a very knowledgeable person too to see how OEM prices compare.

Is there a need to go OEM Stihl or Oregon links or aftermarket solutions just as good? I like to save money, but realize that less expensive does not always equate to the best outcome.

That is true, until it is not. There have been many changes in chains in recent years. Especially, with narrow kerf chains.

Presets can vary in several dimensions. If you only work on one model of one brand of chain, it’s pretty easy to find what you need. However, if you work on lots of different chains, be prepared for surprises: small differences matter.

I now have more money invested in presets, than I do in my spinner and breaker, if I had to replace everything!

Hardest part is keeping them sorted, so that you don’t end up with a loose or tight link, even if the rivet spacing matches.

I buy STIHL brand presets from my local STIHL dealer. Some Oregon styles fit. Some do not.

It can be a lot cheaper to buy a bag of eight or 10 presets from STIHL, then buying them individually. Buy a bunch, in case you make mistakes, or have to do an unexpected repair. Worth the wait if they have to order them.

Oregon style presets are more ‘universal’, because many other companies copied / adopted their chain designs and specifications (Carlton, TrLink, Husqvarna, most ‘no-brand’ chains, etc. ).

I still try to buy genuine Oregon presets. Most online dealers who sell Oregon chain have them. Shipping can be expensive for a small order like that, so plan ahead, and add them on to another order, where the additional shipping may be ‘free’.

Madsen’s
Etc.

Sometimes on eBay, but sometimes the ads are misleading (‘fits’ or ‘replaces’ Oregon, etc.).

Philbert , I am trying to help here. I couldn't sleep. Phil instead of using breaking bar , Oh before I forget ,Do you have a gauge that adheres to a piece of 1/4" plywood for the different chain sizes. I think baileys sells these. Then If you have a pedestal grinder or a bench
grinder and when you find the link you wanna break at, grind into the
strap purdy good and you can put stress on it away, "cause they are hot a dime store pistol" , and will burn you Phil. I think it's easier for me , I have a fear of using the breaker, and a piece of metal in my hide or eye , I wear eyeglasses
have to Phil. I may sent a message to someone before pal.
Madsen's has tons of Oregon chain. Phil , for dollar per loop when you buy a 100 foot roll they make that chains or chains if you have two different sizes of bars , say one a 3/8ths 20 inch and a 24 inch bar or this be 325 pitch with 50 gauge for the drive teeth that fits in the bar. I like stihl chain lasts longer more expensive, work at a stihl dealer , that helps Phil.
I have to search a lot on dipbay for the chain I want. Like for muy stihl or husqvarna 24 inch or 28ths , the 24 inch is 84 d.L. 50 gauge stihls number is 33 rs rapid super 3/8th's
With 50 gauge , I dont remember numbers and letters for regular chain and full skip. I have found stihl chain I need for around $350.00 to $375.00 a roll , that's a good buy. Then I sometimes a mudhole 5 fingered packs or repair loops, that sucks. Phil , if your happy with Oregon , works great to buy the loops pre made at
Madsens. This helps Phil , I will give you my phone number and will talk about it more. I wanted to help, Phil. Buck , in n.c.
