I've got an 042AV that was given to me about 25 years ago. I used it to clear our overgrown back yard when we bought this house and took down 13 or 14 trees. I had some trouble with the saw and took it to a couple of shops. One place did something and got it running strongly again, and when it started running rough again, I bit the bullet and took it to my local Stihl stealer. They took it apart, told me it was obsolete and parts were not available, and said it would cost an additional $$$$ (I don't remember the amount now) to put it back together. I took it home in a box, did some research and an old time saw guy online told me to swap out the carb with a new WS25. He said blowing out the Stihl carb with compressed air can damage a check valve and that the dealer or some service guy may have done that. After a multi year search on ebay a NOS carb came up. I put the carb on the saw, got it all together, and it has been sitting on a shelf in my basement for years. I've decided to get this running again.

Can anyone direct me to an exploded diagram of the saw with Stihl part numbers? I have the 042 Service Manual. Any suggestions on sources for old parts?

I've found that sawzillaparts.com has some proline parts - ignition coil, the plastic switch parts, etc. I'm still looking for sources, even though I don't need much more than the coil and switch parts.

Any suggestions for good chainsaw mechanics who can get this running should I fail to do so myself? I'm in Northeast Ohio, but I'd seriously consider shipping it to someone.

There are quite a few new Proline parts available for these saws now. It used to be incredibly hard to find parts such as pistons, control lever, crank seals, clutch cover, etc. You can buy them all now from Proline. I'm running a Proline piston on my 048 and it seems to be doing great.

I've found Proline parts from Sawzilla. Are they the exclusive distributors or does Proline Small Engine Products have a website?
