Good info, thanks Andy. I always seem to get the porous plastic ones, but now I KNOW it's what should get. Knowledge is good. Let us know when the larger, for pro saws, replaceable inserts are available. It would inspire some of us to change more frequently if we could simply "insert" the insert.

What? you're now onto warranty? but I'll go there...

Warrantly service is such a tiny share of our service work we'd stave no matter what they paid us...

If quality was going down, I'd expect a big surge in warranty work.. Not happening... Where's all your data coming from?

Just saw you other thread; no, I'm not "Gold". "Gold" is tired into the business model a couple of ways - you can then be a "Elite" dealer on the Stihl web site, and yes you can charge shop rate for warranty. Pity there wasn't more warranty to make it worthwhile :) BTW, some states require warranty to be paid at shop rate, gold or not. WA isn't currently one of the them

There will be a big surge in "gold" out west when Stihl decides to allow gold courses to be performed at other then VA.

Good post there ole feller cept one thing, your Gold whether you know it or not, trust me. I'm Gold certified and I have no problem at all saying I sure don't have anything on you.

Your whole post there is 100% correct about states. By law some states make the manufacture pay the full shop rate regardless, some states don't. In Virginia I thinks law because we get paid full shop rate by Stihl. However at the beginning of each year we have to submit to Stihl our rate so they know what to pay. We're at 45.00 hour and we're going to 50.00 this year as soon as I turn the paperwork back in to Stihl. Some shops in our area are going at 65.00 a hour so we feel fine at 50.00. We do break all work down into 1/4 hours and only charge for the amount of time its takes down to 15 minutes. We don't use any flat 1/2hr fee or whatever, only how long it takes to do the repair with a 15 minute min. which is more than fair I think.

The one good thing about being Gold is on parts. If your Gold and you do a warranty job you get the parts at 25% off regular cost.

I agree with you on warranty and repair in general for Stihl products. If anyone thinks they can make a good living repairing Stihl or doing warranty work on thier stuff is in for a rude awakening. I sold 542 Stihls last year and I may have done 5 warranty repairs on all those units and very minor repairs at that. The 99.7% Stihl that never need any repair during the warranty period is a true number indeed.

Yes your correct too about the Gold School only being done at the factory. I think the reasoning behind that is Stihl feels those that come to the Gold are with Stihl to stay. A awful lot goes into that course, lots of money and lots of time. The fellow that does that course is amazing. He knows his stuff and he puts on one helluva good class. When he pulls out the watch and says you got 1 hour to tear it apart, find the problem and put it back together you know its the real McCoy. I liked Eddie alot but I didn't care much for his watch,LOLOL. I think too Stihl wants anyone that comes to see the factory and see for theirselves what all goes into making Stihl products, its quite amazing. To see it is to believe it and I've seen it.

I don't know if Stihl could take the course around the country for the way they have it set up they take you in the factory to the emissions lab and show how engines work on various fuel mixtures. The course and the factory inter mix in the training. I will say anyone that wants to take it from anywhere in the country its well worth the trip.

One thing I do know Lake is you could pass it very easily, you are like me, ya got orange and white in ya blood....

Getting paid "full shop rate" .....what a joke! We also get paid full shop rate from most of the OEM's that we represent. The only problem is that they can do the job in one fraction of the time that we can and that is the time that they pay. They do not allow for diagnosis time, cleaning time, or final testing time and adjustments, just the time that it takes to do the repair. If you put the "full shop rate" into real dollars it comes out to more like 40% of our shop rate but you keep a customer happy by fixing them up quickly for no charge.

Is the begining Stihl school mostly about warranity and company policy or does it cover how to work on the saws? I have thought about going to the class in Southern CA.
THANKS

Our stihl tech is fantastic with 30 yrs of experience with them and we just sent him to take the silver test and by next yr he has to take the gold to maintain our price level

And as for labor we break it into qtr hrs too. Regardless of rate we feel it's more fair to the customer to do it that way. By the way, lakeside...or anyone else who is/works for a dealer, are any of you using CSystems software?

About half the bronze level is policy etc.. the rest more practical. You do not need to attend a class - it can be done on-line though E-service in a few hours. The Silver school is classroom based and hands-on.

Thanks for another informative tip, Andy. Keep 'em coming...we all appreciate your time and expertise.

I totally agree. Andy is a he!! of an asset to this site. I think an award should be given to the most informative poster per year. Andy definately has my vote.

I'm going to go ahead and bump this post because I was looking for this info for my 025 , about the fuel filters atleast, but the one in my saw actually looks like it has a wire screen or mesh around the insert.

thanks again lakeside, you are a great asset to this forum.
