Just for giggles
Provided the previous owner did not already remove the offending bit or bits, check very closely in the muffler use carb cleaner or fill the muffler half way with kero or diesel and shake it till you hear the rattle Those heavy little gremlins just about never make it out the muffler outlet.

I could be very wrong about the crank but I suspect Lakeside called it on this one

The muffler is just an open box - but pest is right - check it for loose stuff. Unfortunately most is usually lost when you remove the front cover.

If it was me... I'd tear it all down...

OK, thanks for the help. Now I REALLY have a project ahead! :hmm3grin2orange:

The muffler came to me detached. Whoever pulled it to check the piston probably knocked whatever was in it out.

THIS IS WHAT IS AT THE END OF THAT LINK.

I did do a search before I asked. ;)

OK, here's an update. I pulled the clutch cover, and found a loose spring, and a bunch of little pins. Not really bearings, like little rollers.
I wonder if a couple of them got sucked into the piston somehow.

I also managed to crack a fan on the poly flywheel :bang:

I need a tool to break it down further. Searching for the thread I remember reading earlier about that.

That sounds like your clutch drum bearing and clutch springs - doubt if it made it into your cylinder.

1 fin on the poly is no big deal and won't affect your balance... but keep it at one!:buttkick:

Lake, the rep point system is WAY flawed. I owe you about 100.

So, reading the last thread, sounds like I need to put on a new clutch.
The crank and bearings are ok, but I need to get that clutch off. Any suggestions?

My take is secure the piston with rope, and reverse thread the nut, correct?

You need a service manual...

Your clutch probably just needs springs and keepers.

I didn't say you bearings were o.k. - I suggest you remove the clutch and flywheel, then seals, to check them out. Hard to see the flywheel bearing from the outside though.

Clutch - Just put a wooden dowel down in front of the crank to block it. Then use a breaker bar (just for easy leverage) and a 19mm deep socket. Reverse thread removal. Clamp the dogs into a strong vice to counter your leverage.

Look up an old thread of mine - it explains a lot of this:

Thanks Lake, your old threads have been invaluable. I had everything working to get the clutch off, but I fear I was just tightening it up! :( :(

So I can keep the clutch and replace the worn springs. good.

I would be in way over my head if it wasn't for this group. Thanks again.

I guess I've gotten this far, I wont assume the other bearings are ok, although everything seems ok in there...

So, would you guys use the muriatic acid here, or am I better off with a hone, or both?

Also, is there a parts or service manual available online for the 66/ 660 series? There are a few other things that need replacing, and/or are missing,
and a couple things I don't even know the name of...
:monkey:

No need for Acid IMHO dont see any stuck Aluminum just light hone, well lubed, 320-400 grit emory on the piston,,,,,, Id put it back to gether and rin the Pi$$ out of it :givebeer:

After further examination, the loose parts I found near the clutch (other than the clutch spring) was drive sprocket bearings.

Do I NEED an impact wrench to remove this clutch? (he says... knuckles split and beeding) :help:

And, of course, you were right. Have not had a reason to doubt you yet!!

Howdy Musch,

Did you get that clutch off and check them bearings? Just wondering, I was following this thread and you dropped off the radar. Hope you get her fixed Musch.

Too busy at the moment to work on it, I'll check back in when I make some progress.

if u dont want the c clip to disappear u need to cover your hands and piston w/ a cloth when it starts to leave the grove.

dont ask me how i know this. :bang: :bang: :bang:

trick i learned working on guns: big. clear. plastic. bags.

don't ask me how i know either... :bang: :bang: :bang:
