Im thinking about getting one and giving it a try for 600 it seems like a steel as long as they hold up. thanks for the help

Close to the quad cities? The home depot rental there is supposed to have 2 more 6401 rentals to sell right about now. Buy it for $250 and get a new jug for $120.

Save a lot of money that way.

Yes im close im in dubuque . Those seems like good deals for sure. But id like to start with a new saw to see how durable the big bore really is that would be the best way to test it i think.Ive already had a 7900 and the engine was very good i just didnt like the mounts. I ran it for six months logging and i never had aproblem except i broke the mounts.

The rest of the saw is the same as the 7900 I believe. If you don't like the mounts on the 7900, you would be buying the same mounts on the 6401.

For the cost, I would buy 2 then so you have a backup! You could also put in the 7900 OEM jug for $200 vs the 84cc Bailey jug.

Just some options...

Or even buy 2 6401 rentals, buy a 7900 OEM jug and a 84cc Bailey jug and run the saws side by side to compare. Pick the one you like and buy/return the other.

Then you are even money with 2 saws vs 1 saw.

That could be an option but i want a new saw.
Im not as hard on equipment now as i used to be but ive never broke amount on any other saw either. The mounts arnt that exspensive if i do brake one any way and there not hard to change at all.

That might work to.

I put an OEM 7900 P&C on my Makita dcs6401. I was very impressed with the quality! I have an 046BB (newer casting), and it seems to be pretty decent quality, but that OEM 7900 jug is nicer than any oem stihl, husky or anything else I've seen.

I paid $189 for the P&C through Baileys (love dealing with them). That's a $70 difference between the BB. I figured I'd rather have the peace of mind and the good quality of the OEM part. I think the BB kit could last if you put good rings in, cleaned up the casting a bit, and ran good mix. I just trust that OEM jug a whole lot more though.

I think Baileys would do real good by selling a package deal Makita 6401 and OEM 7900 P&C for about $670. There may be an issue with Dolmar not allowing that though.

As far as the carb- if you back the H and L way out then it'll just be super rich. Carbs just control the ratio of air:fuel, and if you want to put more fuel in, you'd also need to have a bigger bored carb to catch up with the right amoung of air. As far as I know, the 6401 and 7900 have identical carbs anyway- and have the same factory carb settings (L=1, H= 1 1/8)

Rings

Has anyone had any problems with the rings supplied with the 6401/7900BB kits? I put Caber rings in that 046BB just to be safe.

I'm thinking about getting another Home Depot 6401 and trying that BB kit out too (compare it side by side to the 6401 with OEM7900 P&C). $12 Caber rings close the gap on the price difference of the P&C kits too.

That deffinently changes things.

i put OE P/C. for the small gain i might get with the BB, i can cut wood and KNOW what i have. i will say that i have been itching to get another HD 6401 and BB it, but that would cost me at least 4 pairs of shoes added to the cost of the saw and BB.
