I would prefer the 7910 before the 372, but the chineese made copies of all the parts for the 372, thats what makes it a winner.

They still make the 372 over seas. Parts will be available for a long time.
And honestly I love a good 372. Id even take an Xtorque over a Dolmar.
What I like with the old style 2 stroke is the simplicity of adjusing the carb, you get an immediate and unmistakable respond. Parts are available yes, but the Husqvarna OEM parts are like weight in gold - it just costs that much. Old Stihl saws like the MS460 the OEM parts cost is practically no more than the aftermarket, and availability is second to none.. 372 don't do the Dolmar 7910, thats 78,5cc long stroke at 4,3kw. You need a miracle for that to happen.

Thats not been my expiereance. Stihl parts are ridiculous. Husky has been much cheaper for me.
As for carbs. Id take a newer Mtronic or Autotune saw any day of the week over an adjustable carb. However I have special operating conditions because we have wild swings in weather and elevation here in Montana. Its nice to not have to fart around with adjustmant screws all the time.

As for performance. I dont care what the specs say. Back in the day I logged with a 372 and briefly a dolmar 7900. The 7900 did have slightly more jam, but not enough to matter. I Have heard the newer version of the 7900 have lost some performance. I wont know as I wont ever buy another Dolmar after my expiereance with the 7900.

This is my price reference;
https://www.diyspareparts.com/parts/stihl/diagrams/ms460-magnum
I bought a OEM 460 crankcase for my build at about 250, a husky 372 would cost about 450 at the time.

I like the old style carb engines before the strato charge because of the ease of adjustment, but the fuel consumption is absolutely terrifying.
Price cylinder and piston kits between the two. In same case the stihl part is double the price of husky.
Plus you can buy from Husky dealers online and you cant from Stihl.

Actually the newest 7900 has more than the previous 7900 version , similar to the Oe vs Ne 346 xp' s but for a different reason . The interim 7910 which I have also owned , was slightly heavier & down on peak horse power but still had very good grunt as is common with most Dolkitas and much more than any 372 xp that I have owned ! P.S. As for Husquarna vs Stihl , I agree 100 % with Ben . Stihl has always been more proprietary & expensive in my opinion at least within North America .

I never found the 7900 to have much more grunt than a OE372.
Over the years guys have commented that Huskys had less torque than Stihls. This simply wasnt true. The Huskys did sound better and carry more RPM because they had much better port designs than Stihl. However, when youbput them into wood and dogged in the Husky saws always had more balls. This opinion applys to the 372 OE era Stihls like the 440,460, etc. The 7900 did have more torque than comparable stihls, but not more than a Husky.
BTW when I bought my 7900 I envisioned a saw that would have nearly the frunt of a 385/390 in a lighter package. This just wasnt the case. What I found is it ran very similar to a 372.

I was looking for a local the other day. I checked 2 dealers and found 2 7900, 1 7901 heated handle with HD, 7300.

What I liked too was the price. The guy could buy 2 7900 PHO for the same cost of 1 500i in same cc class. I'd take the 2 saws all day with regular carbs.

Old pic of running a guys 7900 years back. I could not believe it was stock and only muffler modded with 36"

I only ran a 32" on mine woods ported , pop up with fingers. But to see that stock one pulling 36" way it did impressed me.

Man that was long ago. It got the updated black prefilter covers when they came out finally back then.

I found stock my 7910 was down on power especially with the limited coil . It ran a 28 " Oregon semi skip combo fine , but was noticeably down on rpm with a 32 " bar & chain in the cut . I really preferred my 7900 series better , so i sold the ported 7910 to a buddy and picked up a new 7900prz2 full wrap HD last month . It really rips , Kevin has it on his list for porting this winter . ;)

This was the old school dolmar 7900 before they went to the newer 7900 7910. Back 2004-2010 time frame I would guess.

Only person I know that still has a stock and maybe modded 7900 from that era is @Andyshine77
