Blis, yep, wood has gotten outrageous since oil prices have gone up (we heat our house with oil) but have 2 woodstoves as well. The $220 a cord is cut split and delivered. You can get it delivered in tree length for about $100 a cord.

The military permit saves soldiers a ton of money if they live off base and can burn wood. We mostly cut wood for other people then, Dad was a Sgt Major.

Here's and ad I just found in our classifieds:
"Fire wood for sale, hard wood, I have 8 cord that is 2 years old, cut and slit, you haul $200 acord, I haul 270 a cord-Details-Jefferson, ME"

turn this around

Think of all the places where any one of us could look just as silly even though we think we know what we're doing.

Or take this one step further, next time one of these weekend warriors turns down advice or honest help. Ask if you can have permission to video and post on the web.

If their saw is truly dull, you should be just fine.

There's a saying that my Father is fond of, which I believe applies to situations like this; "No good deed ever goes unpunished." If someone I know personally is doing something obviously wrong, I have no problem speaking up and showing them the better/safer/quicker (or whatever) method. I figure anyone that's a true friend would want to help you better yourself. But if its a stranger, I'll just keep my thoughts to myself and walk (or run) a safe distance away.

Dealers like guys like him anyway--he wears out chains, bars, sprockets, saws much faster than any of us using one the correct way! :D

Hey Ed, are you talking about $220 for a face cord or full cord? Wood averages between $45 and $60 per face cord in this area, so $220 for a full cord wouldn't be out of line.

Just an amateur?

I'm just a chain saw amateur, but I was a Class A mechanic on race cars, antique and other fancy ($$$$) cars.
I learned to keep my mouth shut.
If a stranger tells me it's best to change my oil every 1000 miles with straight 50 weight oil and STP, I thank him for his advice. If anyone asks, I'll offer my honest opinion and leave it at that.
I'm sure I'm misquoting the guy who said he never learned a damned thing while he was talking.

Good post. When you come to think of it all chainsaw operators, race car drivers, commuters, pilots, mechanics, teachers, doctors, volunteers, accountants, lawyers, salesmen, photographers, arborists, clergymen, even actors...well you get the idea...are amateurs on any given day. Giving one the benefit of the doubt and their dignity is probably the best course. Notice I did not include politicians on the list?:biggrinbounce2:
