Manual stove pipe damper

Is there a certain spot from the back of the stove that the manual damper is to be placed?..like so many inches..thanx..DWopcorn:

Are you certain your stove needs one?

I do not think there is a given location. If my stove had to have one I would put it up as far away as I could to back up the heat in the pipe. But I am an owb guy..

Ive got a pot belly stove and a Sierra woodburner and like Eric says I put the dampers where they were convienent to use and install .
