4 yrs ago I bought my 1st chainsaw 42cc craftsman with 18" bar and safety chain--I hated the thing at 1st--I had trouble starting it and then the rope came off of it so I had to tear it apart to reattach it and a few days later it broke off again--so the next time I fixed the rope I split the end and tied it around the tiny little screw that held it in place and I used crazyglue on it--yes I i did--LOL but its still on there

after re gapping the sparkplug--I never have trouble starting it--this is a lower compression saw isn't it?

anyway I kind of like the saw now for the small work I do--its light and starts everytime--I did almost kill it though cutting up a large appletree

I just need to get a 16" bar for it and better chains than the safety chains

I would also like to muffler mod it

are there replacement cylinders and pistons to get more CC's out of it

I'd spend maybe $100 on it
I have no idea, I need to get another cylinder for mine. I tried to lean it out a little too much with a 50:1 mix and scuffed the cylinder. Its been a while since it ran.

I recently ported and polished a poulan 2600. I widened the exhaust and intake ports about .125" on both sides then polishe them to a nice chrome finish. Then I polished the trasfers. I then gutted the muffler and matched the muffler and gasket to the exhaust port and drilled two 1/2" holes in front of the stock exhaust exit. I have the low and high screws out 2 turns each now. Fires on the first or second pull every time. It actually cuts pretty well now. I don' have a tach so I don't know what the rpms are now. Here is the only video I have of it right now.

I've got a Craftsman 358.351180 42cc saw I need to plumb new fuel lines on, will try some of the mods on this thread. I just bought a new 290 to replace it, so I'm happy to tinker.
