Could someone please explain to me how to get this upper half of the SP81 off without breaking something? Studying the IPL suggests that I should just be able to lift the whole thing off after I've removed all of the screws/bolts, but there's something holding it on around this mount that I can't figure out. Does the whole mount need to come off with it?

So I got a call from the neighbor with the 7-10 I rebuilt the carb on and got running for him, he's 78 and his eyes aren't what they used to be. Said the saw wouldn't " hit a lick" or not southerneis ,even pop or start.
Apparently he thought the start switch was up to start, after I got it un flooded and started I let it run for a few minutes and shut it down to restart test, ahhh no go? Seems like a definite spark issue, he told me years ago it would do that and he'd change the plug and it would start, I imagine after it had cooled down which I think would probably be the condenser.
Probably gonna chip it and find out, anyone else find anything like this?

Hi guys,I think I might have some good news about the domed air filter finally having an aftermarket one.I ordered one from a guy in Wi.who said he's got a company making aftermarket domed filters for the 2-10s,& 10-10s.I don't know any other 10 series saws that took the domed filters & I also understand there were 2 different style domed filters that were made.The cost is $16 + shipping.When I get my filter I'll let everyone know if it works out or not & I'll give the contact info if it does.

Sounds to me like classic condenser problem.Unfortunately Mac used Phelon condensers & I'm told by Bob j.that there are no more to be had.But if memory serves me correctly,Homelite used a Phelon condenser in one of their saws that had the clamp needed to secure it like the Macs do,I just can't remember which Homelite model it was.

Thats GREAT news Ed, I'll be excited to see what shows up for you. I've seen alot of people sitting on 10-10 macs with no air filter.

The mini mac condenser is the same. I've used it with success.

If it's got enough compression to fire, the P&C are good enough for a freebie saw! You might be surprised how good the piston still looks. My freebie 2.3 has 150psi.

Thanks. The compression felt good. But I didn't test it. I have a 10-10S on the bench now. So the 2.1 will have to get in line.

My old saw guy is getting closer and closer to no more old saws. I guess that means every time I go by, and take 3 or 4 more, they are all wnding up on my shelves. Anyway, he has a Mac 33 or 35. No bar, no handle bar. Not many saws left, should I get this one for $20?

That’s kind of what I though. It’s just such an odd looking saw. Since it needs so much I’ll put the money on another complete saw.

Thanks Mark, I'll keep that in mind. I was going to take $100 with me, which would get me 5 saws. But, if I asked he would probably take $5 for that one. Not much left to pick from. I don't want to get into blade saws, but he has a Wright B520, and at 115CC's I might bring it home. It's probably one of the nicest ones he has. They all look terrible with decades of grime on them. It's nasty out today so I think I'll get my big galvanized tub out and start at one end of the shelf and clean as many as I can while my back holds out. Thanks again for the offer.

The one he has is all yellow, no black on it.

Looking at the hind end of it in the last photo id say sp81/80 for sure. Love to have that wide bar on it in the other photo with the hs spike!!

The SP81 in pieces showed up the other day, it is in a little worse shape than I had hoped. Cylinder has missing chrome in a few spits but would probably run. I have a better cylinder so I will use it. Lower AV mount is broken off the oil tank, someone cross threaded Stihl bar nuts on, flywheel housing is broken, came with a LRB piston with no wrist pin bearings and no OE piston. Front AV mount is shot.
I have most of the parts to make it whole again but will need to switch to the sideways oil pump to make the cylinder and oil tank I have work. I don't have the sideways oil pump but I have located one, just need to get it from the guy. I have a good used OE piston too.
Also bought another 3-10E, probably paid too much but this one is complete and has the SDC, can't wait to get it lol.

I just 2 days ago put an sp81 together for my buddy in charleston. It had a bit of chrome missing from the cylinder also. It was missing a few bits also. Av mounts were gooy. Had a good piston though. He said to put it together and see what happens. Well even with the loss of chrome it starts and runs pretty good. Has great compression too. So id say run it.
