Here's some pictures of that same 740W1. Shot 'em yesterday afternoon. The 'swirl' in the bar from an ebay seller's 'cleaning' of said bar with a wire wheel or flap disc is more prominent in the photos than it is 'in person'.

This is the NOS muffler that I installed on the 740. Could smell the muffler paint cooking when I ran the saw for the first time after installing it. The previous muffler had some interesting repairs/modifications...

I get that same swirl effect when I clean up a bar with an abrasive pad on the die grinder. A steady hand can create a pretty cool effect.

I dunno, Aaron ... the paint on that can-style muffler in the top of the pic looks to have its paint intact. :hmm3grin2orange:

Do you think a coke zero can would work too? I don't drink beer, but I have a ton of empty coke zero cans. Not very surprising Mac used them from the factory...

Oh it's intact, but was smoking a bit (the paint on the muffler), and sure smelled like burning paint. The smoke and smell went away after a few minutes. That's the usual with painted mufflers. I paint saw mufflers with BBQ spray paint, and it smokes/smells like that for a few minutes. Works well though. Here's a muffler that I painted with the BBQ spraybomb stuff. Sorry for the 'wrong' saw color. Folks in this thread don't seem to have the animosity for the green saws that the green saw tribe show towards yellow saws...:cool2:

I just want the chain brake off the 3400. I bleed green, but the other day I cut myself and a little yellow seeped out. I've been working on to many macs....


So for some Mac content, Warped just hooked me up with a clutch drum for a timberbear. Mine was all hogged out in the drum from the bearing. Has anyone seen this? Is it common on Mac? I'm just curious as I've never seen one like this before. The crank looks great.

Sorry, but that CB clutch cover came to me from a friend on another continent. It stays with me even if the saw ever gets sold.

The prior owner of your Mac probably had the chain overtightened.

A walk-around the BP399T...

Notice how they deal with the issue of "starter kick back"

PTO shaft is 1.125" dia with a 10:1 taper

Not sure what the tapped holes below the spark plugs were designed for

Last one showing a "normal" Tillotson HL beside the big carburetor on the 399T. This one is also NOS, still in a plastic wrapper and belongs to some kind of large Stihl saw, possibly with an air vane governer?

I'd say the holes below the spark plug holes are for temperature probes Mark .............. the very early 35mm BDC carbs had no venturi like the early kart bdc's and were proberly prone to go lean at high revs were hard to keep tuned as well

I noticerd that thew intake manifold can be fitted fore or aft allowing for two carbs in the hotup mode

Lee - it has been run, that much is obvious from the spark plugs, exhaust ports, and looking in the combustion chambers. I suppose that was done at the factory?

Unless someone comes along with a very attractive offer, I do plan to go ahead and get the engine mounted to something suitable and rig it up with a fuel tank so I can run it. Not sure exactly what I will do with it in the long run but I expect some idea will pop up.

Normally, I'd suggest a REALLY large blender (Think of the Margarita parties!), but that is waaay too 'pedestrian' for Mark.

But wait, he's an engineer, right? How about a powered spark plug wrench? :yoyo:

what do you think the HP rating of that engine is? If enough, would go well on a sawmill. I bet it would rate out at 15 HP or so at RPM, maybe more.

I'm totally suspicious ... and I have an 'untrained eye' on these ...
- Seller doesn't know what a roller nose bar is
- Front handle brace is painted (No attention to detail)
- Need to send a msg to get a link to a video? WTH is THAT?
- Does not show the underside of the saw, so the numbers cannot be seen
