I just spent a couple of hours trying to put the rear handle back together on this thing. there is a spring that hooks into a hole on the trigger and also keeps upward pressure on the palm safety. I cannot for the life of me get that thing to stay working. after a few test pulls of the trigger, the palm safety fails to come back up. the thing is a nightmare to line up for assembly also. I have the IPL, but it isn't very helpful.

assembly is not mentioned in either the PM1000 or the P100 service manuals. unfortunately, although I took lots of disassembly photos, I was unable to even see how the spring originally was installed as everything popped apart when I opened it a few weeks ago.

hoping I'm just doing something stupid, and someone can enlighten me. the red arrow in the 3rd pic is where I'm assuming the long leg of the spring hooks in. I'm also assuming the short leg of the spring is what holds the palm safety up.

This may or may not (probably not) help with the saw handle assembly, but on a small McCulloch that I fixed the spring was attached to the same pivot point as the throttle trigger, and then also applied pressure to the throttle safety lever:

Is that a possibility on that PM1000?

I'll take a look at that, but the IPL shows the spring and the palm safety mounting in the small side or left side of the handle, although I don't see a way to keep them in there while putting the 2 halves together. will certainly check it out though. appreciate the tip.

figured it out this morning. seems stupidly obvious now, except that the IPL shows the short leg up... I did end up having to bend the long leg of the spring upward a bit after I took the photo in order to hold the palm safety up all the way. I probably would have seen the spring coil marks on the post if I hadn't media blasted and painted the whole thing.

see above. didn't go where you thought it might, but your picture got me to rethink it this morning and figure it out. thanks for taking the time to help out last night.
 
I just completed my first Mac overhaul. It was a challenge since I have really never gone this deep into a Mcculloch. Fun project though with some blood sweat and curses!

Thanks to Mark for the helpful advice and ray benson for the shop manuals.

Fully disassembled and rebuilt. New bearings seals, gaskets, fuel system and starter rope. I’m pretty happy to add this one to the shelf😀 Plan to do some test cutting at some point.

That saw looks like new!
I have the same saw but it’s a Partner P100 it came without a chain brake. I put a 32” Husqvarna lite bar on it and an eight pin drive sprocket. It got doggy at wide open in wood so over rode the governor circuit in the carburetor. Just be careful how it’s run and it’ll really eat hard wood.

mine has the slot in the top of the clutch cover and all the attachment points inside for the brake assembly so I assume it came with the brake, and someone took it all off. I could be wrong though. thanks.
