Hey folks,
I'm new around here. I just got a McCULLOCH MS1635 for Christmas. My first saw. Santa did not know I was looking at HUSKYS and the like. My question, is this a decent saw. My use of it will be light to moderate but you never know. Somebody will want some firewood cut or dead trees removed, it seems whenever I get a new toy someone has a use for it. I caint find much info on this model other than price. This thing anygood?

I'll withhold judgement because I've never heard of it either, but if it's new it's at the bottom end of the quality scale. I didn't know Mac was even making saws any more.

The quality is surely adequate for the purposes for which the saw was designed.  It will likely provide a satisfactory service life when used for infrequent light duty tasks, and maybe more.  Certainly shorter if abused or neglected.

Thank Santa.  If the saw doesn't meet your requirements you can always supplement it at a later date.

I've seen one of the line at the local farm supply store and I think I saw that it was made in Taiwan.  Not that that means anything good or bad, but I'm thinking it's a new line and not something simply re-badged.  If that's the case, there's probably no way to tell what or how it's going to do long-term.  It may offer a very pleasant surprise.

Let us know.

When you wear out the two chains that come with the saw, buy a new spur, bar and chain of a better quality. I've wrecked the chains on one already. They are a homeowner saw but with better quality bar, chain and spur they will last longer and cut better. Most of the parts are interchangable with the 3505AV so it makes for a parts saw if it breaks down, with the two year warrantee, if it breaks send it back for a new one, at least you'll get two years out of it if you don't use it for parts on the 3505AV.

 Thanks guys. Yall gave me way more than I had. Being a gift I'm duty bound to make a go with this thing. I heard that Big (M) has had a bad run for some time, just wanted to find out if this saw was worth the trouble of keeping around. I've found them on the net for $189.00. I don't know what the giver paid. I sort of wish I had the 189 to pay on a HUSKY 55 or a 21/29 Sthil. My local shop pushes a lot of HUSKYS and Sthil's. He is pretty high on them. We have a lot of people who make a living in the woods here in Alabama. I, thankfully am not one of them. I used to pick some extra money doing it during college but found out quick it was HARD work. Anyway I'll just use it around the house or throw it in the truck for a trail cutter or door ripper. My job sometimes finds me far from a beaten path.

The original McCulloch ceased operation in 1999. Someone bought up the tooling and the North American rights to the name.

Electrolux bought the Eastern hemisphere rights to the name, and are making a totally different line of saws with the McCulloch name out of Italy.

Homelite went out at about the same time and I heard that that name is appearing on saws built in Mexico.
