So the SP60 I have been working on seems to have that 'borderline' level of compression where sometimes it'll run, but more often not. It may be just a simple matter of swapping out the DSP valve, or more involved like a re-ring. In either case, the parts aren't on the shelf, so the saw temporarily is and I started in on this 'special' SP60.

The features I've been able to identify as being part of the 'Cold Weather Package' are: Rubber handle grip, special AF cover w/enclosed ducting, muffler shroud, and the front hand guard.

Here's a shot of the duct and the interior control flap:

Notice how the muffler is installed; the exhaust points up. When the duct is set up for warm weather (closed), it draws intake air that first travels across the top of the cylinder. When configured for warmer weather, the (closed) duct allows exhaust to travel upwards. Hopefully, some of our forum experts can shed some more light on this.

The first big issue was how to deal with the JB Weld repair to the fuel tank. In an attempt to soften the epoxy, I heated it briefly with a small butane torch. Not only did the epoxy soften a bit, but all of it flaked off in three pieces. Doesn't look like the area was roughed up enough before the epoxy was applied.

I am looking onward to the completion of the repairs to this saw. I hope you pot pictures as you wok.

Where in NW Indiana are you? I grew up in Calumet City, IL

Bob

Hi Bob ... I grew up in South Holland .... you ever go to any of the clubs on The Strip?

That's a really cool saw Ted, I've never seen one saw with all those options. I've only seen them in the IPL's.

I'm super jealous too. Please keep us updated.

Update - Teardown

So checking IPLs revealed that the altered muffler exhaust was a 'local mod' after all and there was no mention in any of the service manuals I have. Looks as though this saw has a few local mods. Couldn't absolutely rule out the muffler thing entirely, as I've seen other brands force some exhaust back around the engine fins for cooling.

I've decided to try a product called Red-Kote to seal the tank. Mark H told me that he's had good results and that the excess product can be stored. Other products considered were from POR-15 (could not be stored very long after opening) and something called 'sloshing solution' available at an old tractor dealer near here (had a really lengthy product safety sheet).

So now we have a growing pile of really dirty parts. All that remains is what you see on the engine block. I'll see if I can visit a friend today/tomorrow to use the parts washer. The list of parts I'll need to order really isn't very long outside of the rings/seals/bearings.

Yah, I love it.

Took this one and riveted the end a bit better than how I got it. Have been on the lookout for firehose at flea markets and estate sales since!

I should be able to put out some feelers on the job for old fire hose. Its probably laying all over the place in the plant. Let you know if I come up with any.
