I have an older Mac with a bar but no chain. Can I wrap a string around where the chain goes and get a measurement to purchase a chain? Or is there another way to do this?

If you clean the bar good close to the power head you should find some numbers engraved in it. These are the chain specs for that bar.
I cleaned the bar with carb cleaner and looked at it with a magnifying glass. I do not see any numbers.
Older bars rarely had any chain details on them.
What saw, what bar, and what drive sprocket do you have? With that information it may be possible to determine the DL count but the best way is to take the saw and bar to a competent shop and have them wrap chain around it.

Drive link counts can vary with the drive sprocket, radius of the bar nose, etc.
A good, servicing saw dealer, as noted above, can help.
If you can identify the pitch (via sprocket) and gauge (via bar groove, and have some old chains lying around, you can break one of those loops and measure the DL count.
Or, if you have a home improvement center nearby with a liberal return policy, buy a chain that looks close and test fit.
Keep it clean, and keep your receipt, in case it does not fit!
