Hi guys! What is a (Mercury Kiekhaefer) and Does anyone have any information on these saws? I believe they were two-man. I recently saw a couple on e-bay. My father received a two-cycle Mercury Kiekhaefer motor a couple of years ago. He got it running but wasn't sure what it was to power. Since it was military green he assumed a generator or pump. After running across them on e-bay I showed him the photos but he is not convinced that it was a chainsaw. It is in a sort of cage with a large wheel for rolling. If anyone has info I would appreciate the help tracing this things origin and purpose. Thanks The Hoosier

MSU-Bottineau (ND School of Forestry, 1906), where I teach, has a Mercury powered chainsaw that is army surplus, built in 1946, sold by the army in 1951. It is in its own case with 2 chains, one in cosmoline. These are the upright chisel type teeth that are sharpened on the topside and basically just knock out chunks of wood. It is 2 cylinder, 30" bar with the chain tightener and oiler on the outer end. The bar looks to me like some old Disstons I have seen. I get it out and run it every couple of years for the students. I tell them that I will let them run it one handed if they like. Since it weighs 250 pounds according to the carrying case, I am not going to argue with the person who can handle it one handed. I will take a picture of it some day and post here for you folks.

Mercury was the main outboard/other stuff brand that the Keikhafer family started years ago. They stopped making chainsaws in the '50s. Now they're owned by Brunswick and are still making outboards.

great engine

I work in marine contracting first and tree work second. Let me say that from all i see, it's no surprise you got that motor running. Mercury made and still does make some of the best motors around.
