On a few tree falling videos I have seen , a faller wearing a metal sheath on the back of his belt to hold a small ax "handle-up" .
I was wondering if that was a home-made item or was available somewhere .
I have searched a bit online , but not had any luck .

Why to carry hatchet ...

1) I have been carrying one since my first climb (before I owned my ms200t).
2) It is quite handy to smooth up short barbs from old broken off branches .
3) Wespur catalog sells a "Tree climbers wedge/hatchet kit "
4) I have seen many climbers on videos packing hatchets and wedges .
5) I was a carpenter for many years , I have an instinct to hit things with something similar to a hammer .
:)

i carry a framing hammer with me when im chunking down big stuff because sometimes its handy to be able to drive a wedge (which i put in my back pocket every morning when i leave the house) and i almost never take my harness off when dropping the stick so my hammer is right there when i need it, it is nice to have that because you can still break off dead stuff that is small with it, it has enough heft so set a wedge, you can pull nails out of trees from signs/clotheslines or whatever and you dont have to worry about cutting yourself with it
