Since this thread has awakened.....

does anyone know if the Homelite Little Red XL was the last production of the top-handle XL?

:drinkingcoffee:
I think the XL2 was the predecessor to the XL...as far as built on the same top handle design/frame so to speak. I could be wrong though and maybe another model after the XL2??

Per the factory spec sticker on a Homelite Little Red XL that was listed on eBay, production was '95-'98. It very much appears to be plastic (I've never seen one IRL) and definitely has a primer bulb. Acres site, CSCC, doesn't list this model.

BTW, that is how the saw is literally labeled--Homelite Little Red XL.

Edit--Some of the images I found on Google showed what appeared to be the identical saw model, but without "Little Red."

I think Homelite came out with nearly the exact same saw and called it the "Bandit" and it was black. Later versions of the XL had a plastic piece to hold the air filter on. I guess the older ones use vacuum to hold it on.
Mine has the plastic air filter cover and I asked on my thread in Chainsaws about it, by the model/serial number...couple of guys chimed back that mine was the 30cc model, made early 90's if I remember correctly.

That sounds about right. I think I bought my first one in the late 70s or early 80s, was a great saw but cracked toward the back of the handle, bought a new case for it and it cracked there too. I ended up buying a plastic one, no cracking.

I have an XL2, must be an early one. Same as the XL except has 2 throttle triggers so it can be used with one or two hands. Good little cutter but mine has no hi-speed adjustment and it runs a bit too rich. A little easier to service than a Mini Mac 110 but the McCulloch out performs it.

I think the Homelite Super 2 came out after the XL . it was essentially the same saw but it had a few more cc's and could be had with a dual trigger option.

I'm now 93% certain there was a couple of "late" small XL models (reitroduced into the lineup?) quite a while after the Super II. I had a Super II that was magnesium and had the dual trigger.

On Acres sight I eventually found a XL that looks identical to the Little Red XL, judging from the one side in the one photo. It appears to be plastic and the info (if correct) says introduced in '91. I'll post the link.

Now I'm questioning why I put so much effort into trying to figure out a Homelite XL :crazy2:.

I have a pile of those little engines that I change when an engine goes bad. Some are XLs, some are Super 2s and honestly I can't tell the difference when they're exchanged, they all run about alike.
