Yes, the term "misery whip" is slang for crosscut saw, either new or old. Crosscut saws are still being made, but production is down quite a bit since the invention of the chainsaw.
I,ve used them in wilderness areas on some fires its actually kind of fun, alot quieter and more teamwork needed to get trees down and bucked, remember nothing was over 16" dbh, not high production compared tom aa chainsaw but everyone should cut and buck at least 1 tree with a crosscut and axe.
At least using one of each tool will make a new logger appreciate his chainsaw a little more.
I've never had to use a crosscut saw before, but I have used axes and bowsaws on camping trips. What a BIG difference the chainsaw makes while cutting!
