I recently sold a chainsaw on ebay. Everything went smooth until the buyer received the package. He's claiming that there was no bar in the package. I put the bar in the box, so i know i did forget it. U guys think its possible that the bar some how made its way outta the box? Or do you think he's tryin to get a new bar outta me? Would the postal service notify me if the took something out?

Bars can easily slice a hole in the bax and fall out if they are not packed tight.

It has happened to me at least 3 times on saw I have purchaced.
The bars slice through the box if the are not secured in some way.
If the package was insured file the claim for the missing part only. UPS and USPC will pay for the missing part only and allow the reciever to keep the other items.
If not well I guess you will have to decide how best to handle it.

Not trying to be a smart a**, But allot of people call them a blade.
Left loose in a box, will act like one.

I had the package packed real good. Looks like the shipping guys must have been tryin to re-inact the cowboy's atempt to make the game winning field goal from last weekend's game. :jester: :jester: :jester: That was so great....the cowboy's loosing HAHAHAHAHA

It has happened to me once.

Guy assured me that he did pack it. I have a vague recollection that the edge of the box was open slightly at one edge, probably enough for a bar to slide out of, or be slid out of.

I package saws too and if I'm honest I suppose I can see how it might happen. You take all the time in the world to ensure that the saw is in right, centred in the box plenty packaging around the vunerable parts, then the last thing to go in is the bar which you stick in the box across the very top of everything else, diagonally because it's the only way it fits.

Looking at the other replies it sounds like it can genuinely happen.

whether or not you should feel duty bound to replace it is another matter..

I would add that I now wrap the bar in bubble wrap first before I put it in the box. At least that way if it does "happen" to slip out of the box, it's going to be obvious that it has.

Shipping goons

There are some real ones out there...

In fairness to UPS and FedEx, my side porch was a UPS receiving dock for 2 years of 2x/week Snap-on deliveries. In that time, I can probably remember 10 or so damage incidents or torn box/missing a few widgets. It was pretty rare, but stuff happens.

A couple years ago, I unloaded a lot of extra Jeep parts (normally odd-shaped, heavy, sharp, or a combo of) including a full 8 pt weld-in roll bar kit and sent it all UPS. I only had one issue (me forgetting a widget in the box-cost all my profit to send it separate & asap) I tend towards overkill with bubble-wrap or popcorn, suitable cardboard, and lots of good tape. Kinda jacks the shipping cost a little, but so it goes.

I've also bought/received a lot of Jeep & bike parts from far-flung vendors and private sellers via internet or phone and have had pretty much 100% satisfaction. There have been some tight schedules involved (normally due to mis-communication) but overall OK.

That's not to say that problems won't occur. As stated above, figure on a 'value' of the lost bar, and submit a claim to the shipper, and deal with the buyer as best you know how. Set the claim high enough to sport the dude a new bar then wait for the settlement??? What was it anyway?

I purchased a saw off ebay a couple of mo. ago; The bar was removed & put in a scabbard (nose end), but the rear of the bar was sticking out (unprotected).

Needless to say, when I received the saw, the bar was protruding from a small, thin slice in the corner of the box.
It wouldn't have taken much for it to have fallen completely out of the box.

If the bar ends are not secured with heavy cardboard, etc., this is bound to happen. I suspect that is what has happened in your situation. I would say that it is up to you & the buyer to come to an agreement on how to procede with this "hurdle" in the transaction;

Can he verify that the box had any type of damage to it, that looks as if the bar may have worked its' way out?

Good Luck!
Regards, katt :)

I recieved a saw that was shipped to me with the entire 18" bar and chain protruding from the side of the box.

Luckily it was still bolted to the saw and didnt get lost. :dizzy:

i also received a saw from a former as member and several other items and the supposed to be included bar was missing. good pkgng w/ no holes in the box. seller claimes it was in the box for sure. it was a 20" bar and my 20" bars would only barely fit in the box diagonally w/ bar on its edge. strange part was that there was not room above the saw to turn the bar on its edge.

he has split and doesnt answer my correspondence

guess it can be either way

It happened to me once also. The box was recieved, clearly with a slice in the box where the bar probably exited. UPS was a total PITA to get it resolved.

That very same thing just happened to me! I sold some McCulloch 10-10 parts, including a bar to a guy up in Washington. He sent me an email saying the bar was not in the box. I sent him a refund on the bar because I thought it was the right thing to do - But I know da*n good and well I put it in the box. It's been driving me batty wondering what happened to that bar, now I don't feel so stupid LOL ! ! ! I asked him if it could have cut the box and slid out, he replied that there was one small tear in the box but there was no way the bar could have come through it.....I'll bet it did. What's the best way to ship a bar in a box with other parts? Make some cardboard bumpers for the tip and the back end? Matt in KY

Count me in, last saw I shipped on Ebay the fella calls me and says the bar isn't in the box. He also says he doens't see how the bar could even fit in the box. Hmmmm, I've packed about 25 saws now and this is the first I've has any trouble with. I always wrap the bar in bubble wrap and fold the ends of the wrap over the end of the bar and tape it like mad. I asked him if there was any holes in the box. Well ya, there is one kinda long and narow. He still wasn't detered from asking me what I was going to do about it. It wasn't on me to do a dang thing b/c he didn't want insurance. I told him I would split the cost of the USED bar with him and refunded him $15. Best $15 I prolly ever spent but it still gives me the monkey butt.

Bars need to be secured separately in corrugated cardboard with packing tape that has the fibers in it. That way the bar can't slice the box open. Any bars I have sent longer than 18 inches usually get sent separate. Just because of this problem. It doesn't cost much more for the smaller bars. But when you get into shipping 36 inch bars... heck, they weigh as much as some small saws!
