Q,

The 346 clutch is small spline, and I can't find 8 tooth 3/8th pitch sprockets...you or anyone else know of a source?

I find it hard to see how semi chisel in any filed style could hold a candle to square filed full chisel.

Rbtree you will not find a 8 tooth 3/8 small spline gear unless it is a race gear
use the drum and pump gear from the 357 on a 346 and you now have a big spline, some drums that i have been getting need alittle machining to work and others donot same part number, not sure why

As ehp states, I'll have to use parts from the 357XP, a saw also developed by Magnus by the way, to get what I want out of the 346.

Another thing; Can I post pics without having an url to them?
Can I just paste them into the msg?

Q

In the message/reply composition window, there's a location to specify the attachment file near the bottom of the text entry portion, above the "Submit/Preview" buttons. When you've previewed the message and are happy with it's content, then either fill in the path to the file you want to attach in the "Attach file" box, or use the feature to browse to the file on your hard drive to fill in the path. I don't use Windows or the Windowsy stuff available for Linux, so it's a guess on my part that maybe you can drag the file into the "Attach file" entry box from either your desktop or file manager ("My Computer").

If you "attach" the file into that entry box and preview the post, the file will get sent to the server but the entry box will be empty in the resulting preview so if you "Submit" it then, there will be no attachment and you'll have to enter and send it again when you "Submit". It's best not to fill in the box until just before you "Submit" the post in order to avoid needless duplicate sending of files to the server.

Sorry, I tried to help... I'm sure you'll find it's really embarrassingly simple.

I have been using the ATOP system for several months now doing some testing but need to make the timed cuts...so far, I am very impressed...I have been cutting dry spruce with the 2156..I am getting better with it, so it is time to make the cuts before and after....I was thinking of 10 consecutive cuts before, and then 10 consecutive after filing with the ATOP...that should allow us to see if it keeps a better edge longer...any ideas for a better test?

Dennis, is the picture Withfile.jpeg a stock photo from Atop or is it one you did. Seems to me that the file goes much too deep edgewise into the side cutter. Is this as recommended by Atop?

Frank

Frank,

The pic with file is my own doing. In the instruction the corner of the file should pass the line into the outermost portion of the side plate - I might have gone a fraction of a millimeter to deep...

Q

Here's another pic of the cutter showing the inside of it.
Note the top-plate angle; It's quite steep, steeper than on my square filed cutters so edge holding capabilities ought to be quite good.

Q

Dennis I can see why with semi chisel you would have to make sure the corner of the file cuts down and out far enough to be outside the cutter radius.

In Quatanlisons picture it looks like he blended on the inside with a round file or is that accomplished with the edge of the same file.

346 MMW

Hello Ola,Russ and all other initiated chain saw users out there.

I do appriciate to follow the conversation in this delicate subject, engine tuning and chain sharpening. The story of the MMW tuned 346 XP is that Magnus Johansson stood for the engineering and two stroke engine knowledge with some contribution from myself of specification and "consumer insight". "Nobody wants to have something that is standard" As pro- logger making your living from chain saw work are of course high productivity number one thing of chain saw feature. The MMW 346XP are meant as a chain saw for production use with high logging power. Please note also that the free load rpm are lower then standard 346XP(about 500rpm) the point is the rapid acceleration witch helping making the work faster and avoiding to stay at to high rpm"s witch use to "kill" engines.Correctly maintained and you get 2-3 seasons out of the tuning.

Please note also that the development of power output on chain saws during the latest 10-15 years has been almost flat, same development do we also see when it comes to cutting faster by the saw chain. This is probably the reason"s why tuning and faster cutting always draw loggers attention.

I also appriciate your testing and evaluation of the ATOP sharpening system and for sure will your contribution play an important role for the future.

I would say as a comment to where to find small splines clutch drum 3/8 for 346XP. Oregon does have this as standard.

Happy easter

ATOP Racing Cut

Frank, I noticed the same thing with that picture, but I have found myself doing the same thing on some teeth...once again, it is something that needs practice, but still much easier than square filing by free hand...lol...

The gullets have to be cleaned out early..here is a piece of the manual..

"For maximal cutting performance it is important by a roundfile to file off the "gullet" area as preparation before the sharpening by the flatfile. This action increases the sapce for the saw dust = increased cutting speed and give also free movement for the flatfile. File off the "gullet" area with a 4.5mm roundfile for 0.325 pitch. Approximately 10-15 filestrokes on a new cutter. Repeat this file off of fhe "gullet" are when it's needed with 3-5 file strokes 3-5 times tduring the chains total lifetime."

I do have a copy of the ATOP instruction manual that I could fax someone to post, as my camera is not working at this time..if anyone is interested email me...

i may get some time this weekend to make some timed cuts before and after using the ATOP..

Goran, Welcome and nice to see you on the site!! Any extra input on the system or instruction is welcome. Any idea when can we expect the 3/8 version?

For sure It will be easier than square filing and I dont doubt it will be at least slightly faster than plain vanilla factory spec round filed. Could be a good transition to square filing. I put a good 40 hours of solid filing before I started to get any kind of acceptable results square filing. The guides would get rid of the problem of the rotational indexing of the file and obviously the corner placement is not critical. I think the stay sharp characteristics will be the key to its success but thats just my impression from seeing the pictures: armchair engineering at its very best!

...here's a pic of the modified outlet of the mmw346xp...
That's a17mm round pipe + some extra vents in the front...

Q

That`s a big pipe for the 346. Is the stock outlet still open? Those vents look pretty cool.

Russ

The stock 10mm outlet was removed and replaced by the 17mm. We don't have the top outlet variant in Sweden. Normally the jungle muffler + the 17mm outlet is fitted on the mmw346 - hence my additional vents in the front...
