still an advantage on a mill, i just redirect the exhaust accordingly, when i milled with a muffler modded husky 181 years ago the exhaust allways blew back in my face. i have learned a few tricks since then :) for milling each muffler mod is diffrent, according to what the customer desires. options are endless there. same price and same mod job tho :)

We are quite a bit more expensive. Our rate for a stage II conversion is $275 plus return shipping. Starting May 1st the price will be going to $300 and we are currantly 6 weeks out. You can figure our woods port is going to have around 8 - 10 man hours into it. We have just hired 2 more techs and hope the turn around time to be cut to 2 weeks by the end of May.

THALL are you sure you can do this porting stuff because it is not trial and error.. You need facts and figures to complete a mod of this caliber.. Who did you get your info from or is that a trade secret.. Do you have saw building experience other than stock..Mods take a lot of talent like certain builders on here have..

Well kind sir let me tell ya. I got the facts and figures from one of the utmost professional saw builders here on the site. I have all the info and measurements to do a complete mod. I even went one step farther and contacted the boys at Stihl for some 'Ultra" professinal advice on dealing with ports and such and they have informed me the measurements from my sourse are correct and that I should see a enourmous amount of gain out of my 046. I asked them why doesn't Stihl just offer modified cylinder/piston and muffler combo's. He claimed they could easliy do that as bolt on options and the parts would be no higher than stock parts. The problem he says is Stihl is in the business of satisfieing 99.999999999% of its buyers. That 00001% who modify saws would not be worth the investment to bring out a standard line of modified cylinders/pistons and mufflers. That being the case I shall take my sourse's information and do my own. Since I have numerous cylinders and mufflers and pistons to work with before doing my own I figure what the heck, lets give it a try. If all goes well Ultra I will gladly do your 046 as well, free of charge just for the experaince, whatcha say?????????????

Performace Parts

Thall you better tell them boys at Stihl to wake up. Could you only imagine if the car nuts years back thought like that. Seems to me there is a market to be had there. Maybe someone someday will go aftermarket for chainsaws, like car parts and just bolt on your performace. You know like holley, eldebrock, trw, keith black, hedman, etc etc etc. Could you only see what it would be like without that 1%. I bet it is closer to 10%-20% of people
do some kind of mods on their saws.

I'm with you Cut, I thought the samething but they say nope, not so. I have to admit I've been throwing that question around the shop at customers and you'd be surprised how many have no idea what I'm even talking about. I guess Stihl may well be up on this because I've yet to have one customers show any interest in it at all. The guys on this site aren't your regular saw users ,they hardcore saw buffs Cut. That may well explain why there are no bolt on mod cylinder/piston and muffler combo's from any manufacture that I know of. Market just doesn't justify it I guess. It sure would be a huge market for the guys in here though, we'd eat it up wouldn't we,lol.

when i started modifying saws i did it on my own saws and kept working on things. i practice all new ideas on scored up junk cyls. if all turns out well i move to a good cyl/saw. if you mess up on a junk cyl there's no loss. but mess up on a good cyl that just cost a bunch! my customers get the best from me. i will not risk trying an unproven idea on a customer. i try the unproven ideas on my own stuff. if you want proven mods and fast service send me some saws, you wont be sorry you did!

What kind of money we looking at for a total mod for use in the woods? Not interested in a race saw that runs 30 seconds but a wood saw. Also with mods how much gain can I expect in power over a stock saw verses the same saw modded??????

$250 for the woods port mods. the woods port is a work saw. not race.
usual gains are around 25% with the package. i have everything listed on my website at http://www.nwchainsaw.com

the mild race package is $400

i will be updating my website with a bunch of the videos from my forum in the other sponsors section.
