I am looking to get a modified muffler for my ms 440. If you have one you are willing to part with pm me. I want to keep my stock muffler in case I have to do any work were their is a wood fire risk. Would like it if you accepted pay pal. Thanks for the help.

Why don't you just get a factory dual port muffler cover? It won't void any warrantee you may have left on your saw, and it's got a spark arrrestor installed. They're about $30 at a dealer. P/N 1128-140-0801.

I have one on my 440 and it works well

on the bigger Stihls that I can buy the dual port muffler is all I use, no need for anything else cause it works great

Ed, on the 440 that i just got for Eric, the combo of the stock port and the dual cover is nowhere near open enough. I made each port about 35% larger, which got the saw back to where they used to be years ago.

I think sometimes we get bigger holes than you guys but I do believe that we are starting to get the same mufflers like yous do , I know when the 066 Mag. was around we got huge holes compared to you guys

If you look at used 044 muffler backs you will see a large difference in the side exhaust port sizes. I have some that are really small and some older ones that are quite big. I haven't measured them yet, but will tonight. It appears they went from about 3/4 - 5/8 inch size down to about 1/4 - 3/8 size. According to the Stihl Technical Bulletins they added the metal heat shield behind the muffler in 1997, so maybe mufflers from about that time have the smaller EPA size side exhaust holes.

If your buying a used muffler look at the side exhaust hole, it's obvious if you see one of the older ones with a larger hole.

Scottr, Just measured the hole on the new front cover I bought for my 044. It is 1 3/8" long by 3/16" wide. The saw did sound better with it installed. The side hole looks to be about 3/4" in Diameter.

The side hole on my older 044 mufflers is about 3/4". The side hole on the newer 044 mufflers is 3/8". The dual port muffler I measured has the dimensions that Stump Doctor listed.
