"but I like the ability to remove the screen, even though I have never had issues with the screen clogging"

If you notice...the two screws that hold the deflector in place also hold the screen. The screen is the same size as the deflector. I got extras.

So Dan....

If you thought your hole was the right size and you obsured it with say a 43% screen... what size hole did you end up with?

If the wires in the screen increase in diameter by 10% due to exhaust buildup.. what size hole would you need?

Hmmm, these should be SAT questions:D

PS... it's easier to ignore the screen effects by simply making the screen many times larger than the exit... - like the OEM screens

I guess that is what I asked you, isn't it?

Look...I don't claim to be a rocket scientist or even a saw mechanic...just a old wore out bodyman. I am sure not touting this mod "the best". Just thought it might be useful to another newbie as it was easy, required no welding or painting and took less than half an hour...AND...it surely had to help the saw breathe! That's all.

If you do a search on 361+muffler+mod you will find a most excellent step by step (w/pics) of a "Lakerized" muffler, that Lakeside posted. His conclusion, after splitting the muffler, that no internal work needed done as the internals had plenty of flow. Bsnellings 361 is another matter though as it was a highly moddified saw. Woods ported as it called. Do a search on woods+porting and it will result in several hours of very interesting reading.

Welcome to AS!

Sorry, but I don't know. I just used it as it was.

I dont think anyone is saying your mod stinks, Dan. I am glad you and the others that have posted similar mods did so. It has to help over factory. Dont read too much into us messing with ya, its all in fun. At least speaking for myself, dont take me too seriously...

Dan.. it's all in good fun. I was just using your nice work to explore the issues for newbies (and no-so-newbies).

And to answer your quesiton, yes, you'll generally need larger hole if you don't have a large area screen, but I have no idea what screen you have, so I can't answer that question. Also... once you have "a reasonabe size hole" (you do) the exact size doesn't matter as much as many think. It's not like you're racing...

As a simple test, take off your screen. See if it makes a diff. If it does, contemplate your next move;

Go cut wood!

I got these parts from Jacks Small engine, online.

The Husky part # for the deflector is 503078301. The matching screen is part number is 503405601.

I tried to look up the smaller deflector for the 50-51 series that was suggested in this thread but it did not look, to me, as though that design would fit as well but then, the pictures weren't real good.

Perhaps Freakingstang will post some pictures of his setup.

Next time you take it off you could have a spy through the holes and have an educated guess and let us know!

Wow Lake i didnt realize the screen made such a restriction i guess once the 7900 is run in i will ditch the screen and re-tune

While I really do like the way DAN did it! and understand why the area of the screen is a issue... I just may do the pipe mod! the scoop does look best as for not looking moded!

One question on the scoop mod is guess one best be using gloves.. one loose hand and thats it for a burn!

Actually...it's not close to anything.
It's aimed both forward and to your left.
No chance of melting anything or burning your hand.
