Stupid ! Stupid! Stupid!

I screwed up today. I had an Elm removal today. Low crotching multiple leader tree. I got away late and the Utility Guy arrived early-same time as I did. I had plenty of room to fell the tree once the Elec service drop was down and I laid the phone line down. One leader was short(utiliity line clearance pruning in the past) but leaned the wrong way. The other three leaders wanted to fall the right direction. I was hurrying-I wanted to dump the tree and get the elec back up for the customer without having to wait on a return trip from the service man. I ran my tag line through a high crotch and down onto the backleaner. Pre tensioned the line and notched it and made the backcut as low as possible. Made the back cut carfully monitoring the union on the back stem-everything looked good-Until ... when the tree began to fall the back stem seperated and fell 100 degrees offline. Embarassing. Especially since I KNEW better. I considered felling each leader seperately. I considered climbing and tying the back leaner into the other tops. I got in a hurry. All that was damaged was 2 sections of toprail on a chainlink fence (already repaired) and my pride.

Were you workin solo, or was there a brush monkey nearby you could blame?

Glad the damage was light, buddy. Ya never seem to forget those moments, the interval in time between the precise moment you realize you screwed up, and the moment when you finally realize how badly you screwed up. Usually this is just a few seconds, but always a cherished moment.

Then ya look at how bad it coulda been, and it's not so bad anymore

Knowing you screwed up, then having the passion, humility and knowledge to diagnose it and glean as much from the lesson to the picked clean bone; so as not to ask for repeat lessons in any forms presented for you!

Cuz, Nature will surely comply if ya do, and go on standing toe to toe with these forces with the largest life ever!

Happy your safe dude,
-KC

its funny - most of my accidents occur when i dont listen to my conscience and try to rush things. funny how we sometimes ignore our skills in difference to banking on luck. no worries stumper. elms are big pains in the a*s anyway

Hey Justin, dont feel to bad. Today I got a Genie lift stuck in the home owners back yard. We rented the lift to use for trimming all the trees in a trailer park. Then we lined up a bunch of big and funky Cottonwood removals to utilize the time on the rented lift. What happens on the very first day? I come down from the lift in the trailer park, to re -fuel a saw. I was around the corner filling up my 200t and while I was doing that some germ of a human being drove by the basket of the lift and swipe the gear bag that contained my port a wrap, a two ton steel block, a loopie and whoopie sling out of the basket of the lift. This is the second time I have had gear stolen this year. This was on monday. Today we were taking down two dead cotton woods in this little back yard that was on a little bit of a slope. From all the rain the lift started spinning in the mud and sliding down hill to with in a foot of the neighbors picket fence and got stuck with wheels a spinning. This thing was stuck bad. We decided to chip all the brush and small logs an pray for the grownd to dry our. After about two hours of chipping we find some 2" cement blocks in the alley and we line them out under the wheels of the lift. And finally get the lift out of the backyard, but not with out tearing 6 24" ruts in his back yark. Fortunately, we got the lift out and turned in on time, and the home owner was cool with the dammage. He just said, "my back yard looks like $hit any way, a few ruts wont make any difference." Its been a bear of a week, but ya know what? Tomarrow is Friday, I got two days to go fishin, and Monday is the start of a new week. Lets just pray that next week will be a whole lot better than this week,

BTW, I look forward to linking up with you and Rocky this month.

Kenn

You see, your mistake was simple. You didn't use a tapered hinge. I can't believe you forgot to cut a tapered hinge, man!

Glad you didn't get hurt, bro.
