My pal brought this saw to me cause it seized up.

When I got it apart, I found a wristpin keeper gone.

What causes that?

And they tend to not be C clips, but have extra wire, and more like a cursive G of sorts, anyway, that long tail of the clip puts stress on the clip, and it fails and comes off, and takes out lots of bits in its journey to freedom.

If its a C clip, place the gap in the C facing up so its gap is facing 12 o clock if that makes sence.

Cleaned things up a bit and found this nice blueish clutch drum..
This saw has been abused by its owner.. Again.

So now the crank bearings are ruined with the debris?

Thats how it is on a Shovelhead.

Thanks for all the replies.

I just turned 62 and I am still learning...

Had to beat the cyl. to get it off the piston.

Look what I found..

The retaining clips will pop out if they're not installed correctly. They should be installed horizontally. I usually install them facing the rear of the engine.
Similar theory to a master link on a motorcycle chain.
If the opening of the clip is facing the direction of motion, the clip can open up.
The gap needs to be either up or down. If it’s oriented left or right, with the piston accelerating and stopping, the up and downward forces on the clip loosens the ends every half rotation

The guy said he was trying to force a dull chain thru one last cut on a big ol oak log.

He said he was pushing so hard, there were sparks and smoke and then it quit.

The bluish clutch drum tells the tale.

He does shamefull/readily admit to being a dumass..

That doesn’t make it spit out the c clip though

I know.

Besides the damage from the failed clip and the burnt clutch this thing is golden.

Are you using a 1/2" drive gun? If that won`t take one off I would think the crank is a goner.
I know one thing, the 1/2" drive socket is a goner! I would think that if they used thread locker on it it would be loosened up by heating but it wasn't. I plan on taking it back to the owner and explaining it to him.
